Is iPhone 4S's Siri pro-life? The virtual assistant from Apple stumbled over an abortion question prompting users to think that she may not approve.
In Manhattan, when asked for the location of an abortion clinic, Siri responds with "Sorry, I couldn't find any abortion clinics." Are you surprised? It seems odd that the virtual assistant would not be able to locate these clinics if they are available in the area.
In other cities the iPhone 4S assistant actually directs users to anti-abortion locations in other states, which is also odd. It is unclear if Apple is actually attempting to withhold answers to where abortion clinics are to their customers, or if it is just in the way Siri works.
The original developer of the software SRI Ventures Norman Winarsky said, "Those answers would be coming from the Web services that Siri is connecting to, not necessarily Apple. My guess at what's happening here is that Apple has made deals with Web services that provide local business information, and Apple probably hasn't paid much attention to all the results that come up."
Do you think that's a reasonable explanation, or is there something else at work here? Could the iPhone 4S actually be pro-life? It is hard to know. Hopefully Apple will speak to this issue soon, and if it is a glitch, then perhaps they will send out an update that fixes things. Sure, most people have other avenues for finding information than just Siri, but it is still odd that she can't provide this answer.
