I had never heard of the Christmas pickle until I got married. My in-laws did that. It's good to know they aren't as smart as they think they are! :)

I make pickles in Autumn for the Christmas/Hogmanay celebrations. I've never thought of them as German, either, Christine!

I'm another one who never heard of the Christmas pickle. But I always liked the little sweet pickles with a large meal such as a holiday feast. I also just loved watermelon pickles. Like Peter, you made me hungry for pickles. The rest of the year, dill pickles are fine with sandwiches, brats, ham, snacks, etc. but now that we're in the holiday time of year I'm going to buy some watermelon pickles and the small, crisp, dark green sweet pickles.

I've never heard of the Christmas Pickle but my grandmother, who was Irish, used to serve tiny sweet and dill pickles for holiday meals as well as green and black olives. I hope that doesn't make me to weird. I don't mind being weird as long as it's in a good way!

And fortune cookies aren't actually Chinese. That's an American invention too, and don't even get me started on Danish pastries. Blech!! The REAL ones come from Denmark, or are made by someone who came from Denmark, and a true Dane (or half Dane like me!) knows!!! I have to laugh when someone in a cafe in North America offers me a Danish pastry. Once when that happened too many times, I went to a Danish baker, bought a big one, and donated it to the cafe staff with the message "THIS is a Danish pastry. Enjoy!" They loved it!

I heard somewhere that the pickle is actually Polish.

Wasn't that actually invented by a guy who's last name was "German?" Had I invented it, it would have been Christensen Chocolate Cake!

What about "Black Forest Cake?" Regardless of where that comes from, I love the stuff!

Yeah, the guy's last name was German. That so confused me as I did not understand what is special about our chocolate cake *lol*

Hey, one bakery in the black forest produces little cakes in tins... they are especially made for exporting them to the USA, maybe I could get a few of them. I am also curious how THAT might taste *lol*

There is a bakery down the street from here that makes something called a Black Forest cake, and IS IT EVER GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! Chocolate cake with cherries baked right into it (really GOOD chocolate cake!!!!), whipped cream, cherries and real chocolate flakes on top. I always get one every year on my birthday.

Now, everyone who does not know about the "Christmas Pickle" needs to go do a Swag search and earn swagbucks. I am considering doing so myself. I did not think of it as a German tradition, but probably the Czechoslovakian Christmas Spider and the dozen traditional bride's ornaments are just urban legends as well. Commenting for IISWAG.
