Teacher Claudia Tillery was arrested at her home this morning for the rape of a young boy. The minor, now age 14, could have been as young as 12 when the relationship started in 2009. The 42-year-old sixth grade humanities teacher is facing charges of rape, sexual abuse of a child and providing a child with drugs and alcohol among other things.
Claudia Tillery was arrested yesterday about 5:30pm at her home in Brooklyn where she lived with her teenage daughter and young son. The arrest came as a result of her young victim ending the relationship and coming forward with his accusations to police. The victim is a sixth grader at Middle School 35, the Stephen Decatur School, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Tillery had taught at the school since 1996. One has to remember that these are only allegations at this point. Other than the alleged victim's testimony, police have released no evidence against her.
Police were at the school this morning attending to their investigation. The parents and students are in shock from the revelations that their teacher could be accused of such things. One student commented, an eight-grader who was once taught by Claudia, by saying, "I like her. All the kids liked her. She's a good teacher. She was a pretty lady." The student also commented that Claudia Tillery was very serious in class and it was very hard to imagine she could have done this.
According to the local Department of Education, Claudia Tillery has been removed from the classroom pending the outcome of the investigation. The investigation is still in the very early stages and Claudia may well be vindicated before it is over. It is very hard to believe this woman could be guilty. So far things don't seem to add up, but anything is possible.
