It is scary that anyone should be threatened for speaking their mind.

Its funny we speak out against bullies but then when this happens we all claim this guy has a right to his freedom of speech.

Where do you suppose bullies get the idea that someone is of lesser value and deserves to be treated with disrespect or ridiculed?

Do you think that gay kid that was drug by a murdered by being drug by a truck and then strung up on a fence post deserved to die that way because he was gay?

When are you going to realize that god made all of us including gay people? Is he going to bring his wrath down for soemthing he has done?

you want to stop bullies then stop giving this man kudos for perpetuating hate against gays.

Once again, you're so angry and quick to judge. The law was correct. No one should be denied a job for any reason unless they are not qualified. However, this does not make it right to threaten another person who thinks differently. What about freedom of speech?

I agree with a lot of what you say on this Lori.
I see the bullies as those who kill the child because they just didn't want him, or want to give him the freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And I believe that the gov't recognizes we all have freedom of expression if done in a way that doesn't interfere with others rights of freedom.
But how do you know the preacher was hateful? I don't believe God intended that people have sex with the same sex. This doesn't mean I hate them. I just disagree. I have a a granddaughter that is gay. I've searched the Bible for anything that could possibly indicate God's approval. It isn't there. I don't know why God does what He does but I trust Him. He knows the reasons and has already payed for the sins of all of us including gays and non gays. The sins for all of us have been paid for and if anyone goes to Him and puts their faith in Him, He gives the life of God to them. Gayness is just like gluttony, lying, adultery and jealousy. Hate just doesn't have anything to do with it. All sins have been equally paid for.

The preacher was not hateful; he stated his Christian beliefs as he sees them.

I was talking in general terms not specifically this preacher.

And freedom of speech doesnt apply from citizen to citizen...you cannot tell everyone that your neighbor is a child molester and take out an add saying that..well you can but you will lose your azz in court.

Hateful is speech that is designed to inflame Carol. As the mother of a bullied child I would expect you to understand but I guess not.

The bible doesnt say the internet it OK but I think Jesus himself would use it.

We have an inherent difference of opinion, but I always respect your mind. First, I believe that God and Bible should be capitalized as a grammarian and out of respect. I also believe that the Bible was written as an inspiration from God, so the point is moot. We are coming from two different places.
As for bullying, I don't understand how my article implies that I approve bullying by anyone at anytime.

so if the preacher would talk against blond girls that are adopted and say it is against the bible you would be ok with that?

Nope not at all. My point is this. While this preacher has the right to say what he will he also has the responsiblity to humankind to make sure his words dont provoke anger and backlash against others.

No person is born a racist or a homophobe or a bigot. They are made that way.

Now in the case of that Shepard kid suppose those kids that killed him went to this preachers church and heard his lecture on how wrong homosexuality is and then turned around and killed him.

What if this preacher decided that fat people should be sought out and it says that god doesnt like fat people. Or people that wear glasses or people that are ugly.

Isnt there enough hate already in this world without ministers creating more from the pulpit?

That is Old Testament teaching, Lori. No, I don't and neither did Jesus which is why He brought us the New Testament to free us from such law.

The people harassing this church are just as wrong as people (religious or not) who harass gay people.

I so agree, Megan. If you or I disagree with a statement someone makes, walk away, or make your own statement, but to threaten to hurt someone for speech is scary.

The real test of the First Amendment is offensive speech. The minister is an idiot and a bigot. That's not grounds for threats of any sort.

You are right, but if you read the threats this man made, you would know that this guy is a nut job. Anyone who makes threats over a phone is also a coward.

Why do you say the minister is an idiot and a bigot? Did you hear him speak or do you know him? He was expressing his beliefs just as you are.

It's pretty obvious. There are two possible reasons for making statements like he did, diminished mental capacity or bigotry. Oh, there's a third, ignorance. Nonetheless, hateful speech is protected by the First Amendment.

The 14th Amendment, which guarantees all citizens of the US equal protection under the law, doesn't make any exceptions for sexual preference.

It is obvious that some of you do not know much about the Bible. I make that statement because you are so off base in some of your comments. May I suggest that you read it before commenting on what it says.

I am not defending this particular preacher because I don't know the situation or the details of what transpired so please do not misunderstand me. I could perhaps make some statement that deals with generalities but that would most likely not help to solve the problems outlined in your article. As a general rule, no one has a right to cause harm to anyone else simply because they do not agree with them but that does not mean they cannot state their convictions in a non threatening manner.

That applies to Bible believers as well as non believers.

I think the problem is, Clifford, that some here don't take the Bible as the word of God.

I realize that is the case and I have no problem if they choose to harbor that opinion. My problem is when they propose to know what it says when it is obvious from what they are saying that they simply do not know what the Bible actually says. That is the heighth of dishonesty so far as I am concerned.

I think everyone here agrees that no one has a right to cause harm to anyone simply because they do not agree, and that everyone has a right to state their convictions in a non-threatening manner.

There is little doubt, based on the examples, that the man who left the messages is mentally ill. I'll note that the connection to the pastor's views on homosexuality, stated as a fact in the title here, is merely inferred--"believed to be". The caller apparently didn't say anything to that effect.
