There are a couple of recurring characters of Bill Hader's that will make even him laugh during the skits, and one of them is Herb Welch. He brought that character back for another segment in this week's Emma Stone-hosted SNL, and some things just never change.
Herb Welch reports on falling ice
In the skit (below), the latest news segment was about Upper East Side co-op residents angry about falling ice that could become very dangerous. Herb was on the scene to talk about what has happened, and of course he needed some coaching to get some information. Emma Stone played one of the residents who was almost hit on her way to work, complaining that no one was doing anything about it. He did eventually talk to the co-op president (Kristen Wiig), and after he used his microphone to see if she was a woman like she said, Bill Hader broke for a bit. However, you had to love it. Like always, they received a memo of Herb Welch's death, but when they cut back to him, he came to and knocked out the resident and co-op president. The skit ended with him somehow hitting both reporters in the face with his microphone.
It's a character that's done somewhat often, but Bill Hader is very amusing in the role, which is why it doesn't even matter that he cracks. Each time, the skit follows the same formula, and even though you have a good idea what's coming up next, you have to laugh at Herb's antics.
