Selena Gomez is a far cry from Lindsay Lohan or Miley Cyrus when it comes to young women in show business. In fact, she has morals and holds herself to some very specific standards, too. How did Selena manage to turn out this way despite her fame and fortune? She says it's pretty simple: Her mom brought her up right.
According to a report from The Stir, Selena credits her mom, Amanda Teefey, for not giving in to her or to her fame:
She has always reminded me that it is a privilege to get to do what I love to do. So, keeping that in mind, every day was just a normal day to me. I just feel lucky to do what I do.
Selena explains that even after she landed her role on the Wizards of Waverly Place, she was still expected to do both her school work and her share of chores around the family's home. Her mom's influence and strict rules kept the actress and now singer "grounded."
Selena Gomez has always been proud of the fact that she grew up in a single-parent home. She appreciates the sacrifices her mom made for her along the way. Even though Selena has a good relationship with her dad as well, it's her mom who gets the credit for steering her down the straight and narrow path.
It's kind of interesting to learn that Justin Bieber was also raised by a single mom who expected him to aim high and to hold himself to certain standards. Could that be why the two found each other and make such a sweet couple?
Isn't it a shame that someone hadn't taken such a stance with Lindsay Lohan? Imagine how different her life might be right now if she had grown up with the strict rules that Selena Gomez grew up with. Miley Cyrus grew up in a tight-knit family, so it's a bit uncertain what happened along the way that sent her spiraling into occasional drug use and some very questionable attire.
It's more than obvious that Selena Gomez's mom worked hard bringing her up the right way. Hers is a success story that not every celebrity's family can be grateful for. Selena, however, is grateful for her mom—and for being brought up with rules and responsibilities.
