This episode of Unforgettable starts with Al and Carrie visiting her mother in a nursing home. Before reaching her mother, Carrie is on the phone talking about something to do with her sister's murder. Al is holding a drawing of a man of the possible murderer. Carrie's mother was also in the first episode of the series playing blackjack.
Carrie tells Al the mother thought Carrie was Carol Burnett the last time she visited. This is the first time it's revealed the mother is suffering from Alzheimer Disease. When Carrie and Al walk in, the mother immediately recognizes both, which is a surprise. Then she tells them they need to go on vacation more often because the trip to Vermont they just took did them good. While Al gets a call, the mother tells Carrie if she keeps dragging her feet, she's going to lose Al.
Al and Carrie arrive at the crime scene but the body is missing. A security officer found a car idling with the door open but no driver. The car is registered to Harrison Publicity. Carrie and Roe check out the address the car is registered to. The manager says the lease is in the name of Harrison Publicity but Kelly pays the rent. The manager says he got a noise complaint about the apartment, Kelly was arguing with a man. After the manager knocked on the door everything calmed down.
As Carrie is looking around the apartment and looks at a picture, she has a flashback to a newsstand and recognizes the woman as Kelly Latimer. According to Carrie, gossip magazines say Kelly and another girl, Ashley Phillips, hate each other. Carrie looks up a blog with one post saying, "Ding dong, is the bitch dead?" Back at the office, the team is trying to figure out if the whole affair is a publicity stunt but Carrie isn't so sure. Why does a very wealthy woman live in a studio apartment in Queens?
Carrie and Al go to a bookstore to see Dean Clayman, an author and the missing woman's ex-boyfriend. He denies harming Kelly but says she has no real friends and her family cut her off financially until she turned 25. After the fight in Kelly's apartment where they broke up, Dean went to see Ashley Phillips, his other ex, just to talk. Dean says Kelly's only been missing 12 hours and she'll show up.
Al calls Mike as he and Roe are going to visit Harrison Publicity to tell him Kelly's last call was to the firm. Roe asks the firm's manager why Kelly called her at 2:15 am but it was the manager's assistant who took the call. The manager says the assistant told her about the call so she called Kelly later but it went to voicemail. The manager says Kelly took all the blog post and negativity personally.
Back at the office, Carrie suggests she and Al go undercover at some big party so they can get closer to Ashley Phillips. Al doesn't want to go so Carrie takes Nina instead. When they arrive at the club the bouncer won't let them in because they're not on the list. Carrie recognizes a guy and calls him over. She tells him a story about Kate Moss and leather pants. The guy remembers the story and they get in. Carrie doesn't know the guy; she remembers reading the story in a blog.
Inside the club, Carrie and Nina see Ashley Phillips arguing with her publicist. Carrie and Nina approach Ashley and tell her they are developing a reality show about celebrities but they know it's bad timing with Kelly being missing. Ashley thinks the whole thing is a joke. They confirm Dean's alibi that he was with Ashley after leaving Kelly's apartment. While in the club, Carrie gets a call from Al. Carrie and Nina arrive a dockside crime scene where Kelly's body has been found. Roe reveals that Kelly is a fake Latimer and in fact, the Latimer family doesn't exist.
At the office, the coroner's report reveals Kelly was tossed in the water while she was still alive. She also had drugs in her system. Roe thinks it is possibly a suicide. Nina agrees with Roe but Al and Carrie don't. Mike and Roe head back to the PR firm to speak with the manager. The manager says a guy was accosting Kelly at an event a while back and maybe the paparazzi got a picture of the guy.
Carrie and Nina go back to Kelly's apartment but the manager says the paparazzi broke in and took almost everything. While in the apartment, Carrie has a flashback to her first time there and remembers seeing a snow globe with the words "Mountain State" engraved on it. Back at the station, the team figure out Kelly Latimer is actually Leanne Farley. Her deadbeat husband, he beat her, filed a missing persons report. Al got a photo of the man who was stalking Kelly at the event, compares it to Leanne Farley's husband and it's the same guy.
Joe Farley is having a good time in a hotel with two prostitutes and drugs when the team busts the door down and arrests him. Joe tells Al and Carrie that Leanne took $15,000 and left but she gave him the money back when he found her. Joe says he was in the hotel bar every night and didn't know Leanne was dead until he was arrested. He reveals Leanne actually have him $150,000 plus $10,000 a month so he had no reason to kill her. Al wonders where she got so much money.
Carrie looks at a robbery report Kelly filed for a bunch of stolen jewelry and pays a visit to the man she told the Kate Moss story to at the party. The man says his club is in a tough neighborhood so crime happens all the time. She accuses the man of fencing the stolen property to get Kelly money. He admits it and he found out about Leanne and wanted to help her. He says Dean found out about the scam.
After the interview, Carrie has a flashback to the bookstore where Dean was reading his book. He got a date wrong. Carrie and Al get Dean in an interrogation room and Carrie tells him his book is crap and has about 12 inconsistencies in the first 60 pages. Al asks if Kelly figured out his book was fake but Dean insist Kelly was the only fake thing. Dean says he figured out Kelly was fake after the robbery. She didn't care when she found out his book was fake but he couldn't be there for her when she revealed herself to him. He then asks for a lawyer.
Carrie and Nina bring Ashley Phillips in for an interview with her lawyer. They ask her what she was arguing with her publicist about but Ashley doesn't remember. The detectives tell her they know she spent a lot of time with Kelly and asks why the fake hatred in the blogs. Carrie confronts her about the act at the club when she called Kelly being missing a joke. Ashley said her publicist made up the whole act, including the hatred.
Ashley says they were best friends but she couldn't go to Kelly because they were supposed to hate each other. Dean never dated Ashley. He went to her after the fight because the two girls were friends and he wanted Ashley to help Kelly. Ashley goes on to say that she called the PR firm's manager to help Kelly and the manager said she would check on Kelly. Carrie and Al bring the manager in for an interview. She says she got the call from Ashley but never called Kelly. Kelly called her but the assistant took it.
Carrie and Al interview the assistant and tell him they know it was his idea to fence the jewelry. The assistant says he was helping Kelly pay her husband. Carrie tells the assistant she knows that no one initially knew about Kelly's real identity accept the PR manager and once Kelly started telling people who she really was, she had to go. The assistant admits he didn't take the call from Kelly, the manager did, but he recorded it. Carrie and Al tell the PR manager they've identified the killer and want to see if she can identify him and she agrees to go.
They take the manager to the crime scene and tell her they knew she was at the crime scene. Carrie plays the recorded message where Kelly says she tired of pretending. The manager says she will come to Kelly, at the crime scene. The manager admits meeting Kelly and putting her in the river.
At the end of the show, Carrie asks Al to not visit her mother with her anymore because they are no longer together and doesn't want to give her mother any ideas. Carrie visits her mother again. Her mother sees the drawing and asks why she has a drawing of Jonathan.
