Halloween Spider
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn: About 1 1/2 oz. black, small amount orange.
US crochet hook size F
Polyfill
6 pipe cleaners
Yarn needle
Gauge - 4 sc & 4 sc rows = 1 inch.
Note: Do not join rounds unless indicated.
Mark first round of all pieces as right side.
Body
(Body is worked in 2 sections)
Top of Body
Rnd 1: With orange, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around, changing to black yarn in last step of last sc, break off orange. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 7: (Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (36 sc)
Rnds 8 - 10: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 11: (Sc in next 4 sc. decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (30 sc)
Rnd 12: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc, fasten off.
Bottom Closure
Rnd 1: With black, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc, fasten off.
Stuff body and sew bottom closure to opening of top of body.
Head
Rnd 1: With black, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 5: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (24 sc)
Rnds 6 - 8: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 9: (Sc in next 2 sc. decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (18 sc)
Rnd 10: (Sc in next sc. decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (12 sc)
***stuff head firmly***
Rnd 11: (Decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. join with a sl st in next sc, leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off. (6 sc)
Sew head to top of body over rnds 7 - 10.
Legs (Make 6)
(Note: Legs pattern should be join, ch 1 & turn at the end of each rnd.)
Rnd 1: With black and starting at bottom of leg, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn. (6 sc)
Rnds 2-4: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Rnd 5: Sc in each sc around, change to orange yarn in last step of last sc, break off black yarn, join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Rnds 6 & 7: Sc in each sc around changing to black in last sc of rnd 7, break off orange, join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Rnds 8 - 11: Sc in each sc around, changing to orange yarn in last step of last sc of rnd 11, break off black, join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Rnds 12 & 13: Sc in each sc around changing to black in last sc of rnd 13, break off orange, join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Rnds 14 - 18: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Rnd 19: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc, leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off.
Fold pipe cleaner in half and insert with folded end first into leg, clip remaining ends so there is about 1/4 inch sticking out of leg opening. Sew 3 legs to each side of body by inserting the exposed pipe cleaner stems into body first then sew legs onto body.
Finishing:
With a length of orange yarn, embroider eyes onto face. Embroider mouth under eyes.
Weave in all loose ends.
