Years ago, when I was a stay-at-home mom with young children and a nagging drive to create something interesting, I sought to satisfy this impulse by decorating the food I made for special occasions with whimsical designs. At the time, any design on store-bought pastries and food was generally conventional and boring.
One year for Halloween, I made jack-o-lantern cookies.

I also made jack-o-lantern cakes.

As a young housewife and mother, I liked to serve things so that they looked attractive, and I did it routinely. However, these days, I don't do much of that sort of thing anymore. Photography, writing and Gather have become my creative outlets.
Although for myself, I prepare food simply and often eat it while reading or watching TV, I still enjoy serving food attractively to guests.
It wasn't that hard thinking up what I was going to do and actually making and decorating the item. What was hard is that the kitchen had so little counter space to work on. It did help me learn to get organized.
I have tried on several occasions to comment on your story about the music teacher but Gather will NOT let me comment?? I thoroughly enjoyed the tribute to the music and to your teacher.
In the 60's when I lived in Cheyenne way out from town with a tiny baby girl I would play Gilbert and Sullivan on the record player and she seemed to enjoy it as well.
