Adam Lambert: Is Being Perfectionist Stunting Career?

Adam Lambert took to Twitter on Sunday (Oct 9) to answer some fan questions. During his time on Twitter, he admitted that some of his music might be delayed because he is a 'perfectionist.'

So is being a too 'perfect' slowing down his career? Could 'Glambert' be even bigger than he is now if he could just be a little less critical of himself and his work? Here's what Adam Lambert had to say on Twitter:

Here's the deal: there have been a couple of creative set backs on the first single. Mainly cuz I'm a perfectionist. Ha. Seems as though the single will explode in November. I'm sorry for the delay- but trust me, it's worth it. The song HAS to be perfect!

Were the creative setbacks his or his producers' issues? Clearly there are plusses about being a 'perfectionist.' If Adam Lambert doesn't completely believe in the music that he are putting out as an artist, how can he feel good about promoting it? Clearly most of his fans, and they are a die-hard bunch, are excited about his music.

Hopefully they can be patient as Adam works through and gives them the best product that he can instead of moving on to the next big thing.

Since the world isn't going to end til at least 12/21/2012, there is still time to release his next album and single. I don't think a couple of months is going to make or break the career of the greatest singer/entertainer alive today.

I never said it would "make or break" his career...but I would insist that he will never rise to the heights of some of the greatest artists that he actually emulates if he is constantly too hard on himself. He might be better served "letting go" a little and releasing more music. That is what the fans want, right?

You are so right Laurie the world will not end if there is a delay til early Spring. Bryce seems to have another agenda he isn't sharing with his readers. His words will never, emulates great artists, too hard on himself and might be better served "letting go". Who does Bryce think he is?

I am just asking a question...no agenda here. I did say in the article "clearly there are plusses to being a perfectionist...if he doen't feel good about the music the don't put it out" How is that an agenda?

Also let's look at the artists that he is most associated with David Bowie and Sir Elton John. Both, at the height of their careers, put out albums nearly every year (in Bowie's case 2 in one year, and Elton pulled that trick twice in 1970 and again in 1975)...making them "prolific." No, not every song was "perfect" No one can expect to be perfect 100% of the time...if you do, you are handcuffing yourself. In other words... Mozart was a genius, but not every work Mozart wrote was genius.

Bryce: You seem to be making assumptions which you really aren't in a position to make. You know little about Adam as a person yet you tend to judge his motives or reasons for the delay in the release of his single and album. Personally, if you continue to write these ridiculous articles I will NOT read anymore from you.

I am choosing a position that perhaps if he were not so hard on himself, he would give MORE music to his fans and build a larger fan base. He was the one who called himself a perfectionist...not me...read the Tweets.

We'll still be here if it takes a few weeks or several years, he's a once in a lifetime artist, I've already waited half a lifetime for him, I can wait a bit longer.

I understand that the fans that he already has will be there...those are loyal fans.... my thought is that he is actually stunting his ability to catch a wider audience than he has...which would make his stance on political issues have an even louder and more profound voice.

I don't see how it's going to make a difference to those who don't know about him yet, they'll still be there too, and there will be fewer distractions after Christmas too. That's normally such a boring time of year.

That's all you had to say, Bryce. Adam will give us his best. He always does. When you think back, he was on the AI tour and had to record his debut album in a few short months. After that he took his Glam Nation Tour to the States and to Europe. I think he deserves the time to make sure what he produces is exactly what he wants. We have no problem with that. Of course, we want more music, but we can wait. As to comparing him with Bowie and Elton John, that's stupid. You're trying to stir things up. Give it a rest.

Yeah, Adam sure does have a perfectionistic streak, but it usually is to his and our benefit.
However, I'm betting there's more than meets the eye going on with these delays that Adam can't mention. Change in management during the creative phase of his new music most certainly had to have halted the process for a bit. Then there's that leach releasing another bogus Adam album, attempting to manipulate people into thinking its Adam's legit new music. Adam can't come right out and say he now has to put off his own music being released because of that piece of garbage leaching off his name like that.

Bryce..while I appreciate you writing about Adam (which PROVES he is relevant and newsworthy!)..I wouldn't want to do much speculating. Unless one is on the INSIDE and KNOWS what is truly going on..it's all innuendo, rumor and guessing.
The bottom line is that Adam knocks our socks off and we'll wait as long as it takes. He is worth the wait.
Many fans of other great artists of the past have had to wait 2-3 or more years between albums and tours and those artists did not lose fans. In fact..the resulting albums were usually masterpieces. Michelangelo took FOUR years to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Why rush perfection?
Just sit back and enjoy the ride with us Bryce!~ ;D

There is no "guessing" when it comes from the artist's own mouth about being a "perfectionist"...which is why he has delayed his music. There really is no such thing as perfect... and to compare the Sistine Chapel and that fresco to a 10-12 song pop album is a bit of a stretch.... No one is talking about Adam composing the Beethoven 9th or Bach St. Matthew Passion. Still, I have a thought that if he released the music today....(imperfect in HIS mind) his fans would absolutely still love it. Why should he be so hard on himself?

His casual fans may not have known what a perfectionist Adam is, but there were delays with the concert DVD he released and the acoustic EP because of this. Add in the changes at RCA and I think he'll be fine.

Thank you Kathleen....there is a pattern with Adam. I am willing to bet that if he released it now...and not later, his die-hard fans would still love it, no matter what.

This is probably true, but it will be much better if he is happy with it himself, it's no good him trying to promote something he doesn't fully believe in.

I agree, I'd have loved it to be finished in November, but that's not happening. We won't know until spring how much damage the delays causes.

It's impossible for him to be too much of a perfectionist with this album. The expectations the media and everyone else has for him because of his extraordinary talent honestly demand it. And he's soooooooooo aware of that. He's poised for an Elvis or MJ type trajectory. I don't think taking time to breath at this point is a bad thing at all

I think he is too aware of it.... Just be an artist and put your music out. I agree about taking time to breathe, but he has had a pattern of delayed releases. I argue that his fans would love his "imperfect" (in his mind, not ours) music just as much today...as the "perfect" music in 6 months.

Seriously?? If every artist that takes 2 years between albums started to fret over losing fans, the world would be missing a lot of great music. I am so looking forward to Adam Lambert's sophomore album, that I would wait another year if I had to. I would rather him feel like he has given it his all then rush in any way.

This is why you are a "fan." He won't lose those, but could he lose the casual fan....that moves on to the next big thing because he is constantly delaying... it is possible.

It's possible that he'll lose them, but only temporarily. Even his most die hard fans have only the slightest inkling of what he's capable of. Along with the pattern of delays, outdoing even our greatest expectations is also something he has a pattern of. With him 100% in control of this album creatively, the resulting album is going to be phenomenal. That will bring back those who were too impatient to wait as well as new fans who are won over by what he ultimately creates. It's a short term loss for a long term gain. :)

Bryce again u have your opinion and many have commented giving possible reasons for the delay. Have u considered that Adam isn't like the pop stars who spit out album after album w low quality music just to make a fast buck? Many of these type singers will fade fast. The public is tired of mediocre singers and are demanding better quality music. Adam can and does provide this to his audience. BTW he has many new younger fans since last album who r waiting patiently for his new music. He's worth it too.

I agree with what you say about the low-quality, 'fast buck' music. I am glad that I have spurned a discussion...to be honest with you, I enjoy his music, and as a musician myself (classical, and am in the middle of editing my debut album of some Schubert) I have a unique perspective of "if I constantly beat up on myself about perfection I will never release this CD" and move on to the next project. I just wonder if he is handicapping his own creative time by fretting over a project that the fans will love regardless...and not allowing himself to then grow from the current project into the next project. In other words is he slowing down his own artistic progression by being tooo picky...or OCD?

You are starting to make sense to me now Bryce. However I was thinking last night that possibly we may get either two separate CD's with 12-14 songs & 3 bonus tracks on each or one deluxe CD possibly 24 songs w 6 bonus songs. Adam has already recorded about 35 songs so there would be more than enough to split up into 2 CD's or 1 Deluxe. Now if he decides on 2 CD's he could release one early Spring and 2nd one early Fall thus keeping his fans happy and gaining new ones.

Bryce are you aware of Adam's background in Music? He's a classical trained musician and been singing since age 10 first in musical theatre in children's theatre, high school musicals and then you know his history from HS. This is one reason he may be more of a perfectionist than the average singer of today. It seems that classically trained artists tend to be more critical of their singing and their songwriting if they have chosen to got that way. Also another reason for the delay is probably the unauthorized albums being released soon. It would make sense not to release his new music which would probably hurt his own new music sales due to confusion and competition with the other album.

I am happy the album won't be released until the spring. Adam wants to disassociate himself from American Idol. He is grateful for the opportunity that AI gave him but he wants to be known for his own music and not for being idol runner up. He has new management. It seems like all Idol alum are releasing their albums in October/November. By waiting till the spring all the alum will have released their albums and will have been forgotten by then. Adam's album will be perfect. When he starts to promote the album like he has in the past everyone will be amazed by his music, charisma and talent and beautiful humanity. I have no plans to move on to the next big thing.
