Wow Have I Been Overpaying For Prescriptions

I knew that Walmart had $4 prescriptions but I actually just thought they had a handful of things.  My husband was sick last week and he told the person that was taking care of him that he didn't have a job or insurance right now.  She told him he could get the prescription he needed at Walmart for $4.00.  So he went to Walmart.

When he was there he asked the pharmacist what other prescriptions they had for $4.00 they gave him a whole list about 5 pages long.  It turns out that my Metformin is on there and 2 of my husbands medications.  Last time I got my Metformin it cost me $37.00.  Today I went to Walmart and sure enough I got my Metformin for just $4.00.  I was paying more than that with insurance at another pharmacy that will remain nameless.

If you are on any medication or you need some kind of antibiotic you should check out Walmart.  Go and ask them for a list of their $4 prescriptions.  That is for 30 days.  If you want 90 days it is $10.00.  I can't believe I have been paying so much for my Metformin.

Unfortunately my anxiety meds are not on the list, but I am down to very little of that a day as I am much better and I am being weened off.  So I cut the pills in half now, so they last twice as long.  Probably by the time I am done with them I will be able to be off of them all together, then the only meds I will be on is the Metformin.  I have a feeling the doctor will be lowering my dosage on those as well though since I have lost so much weight and my blood sugars are really stable right now.  Unfortunately I can't go see him again until my husband gets a job and we get insurance.

Sam's Club does the same thing. I'm not a member, but my parents are. I've been using the Walmart 4 dollar thing for a long time.

I'm glad you finally went to Walmart. Every time you talked about your Metformin I thought about how relieved I was when I knew that and didn't have to put it on my insurance. As for your anxiety medicine...I was on a thyroid med and it was not on Walmart's list. However, there were other thyroid meds on the list that were 4 dollars. So my doctor just switched me to the thyroid med that WAS four dollars. Granted, anxiety medicine is much more precarious, but it might be something to consider possibly.

The local Walmart in my area will only allow a one time 30 or 90 day prescription, when one has insurance.

I didn't give my Walmart my insurance information. I get my four dollar meds from Walmart, and the ones that I put on insurance are at a different pharmacy.

do you mean, if you have a like a two month refillable or ongoing medication, you can't use them?

Both my grocer and Wal Mart do the $4 Rx. Amber is right, you do not put those through on insurance because it is cheaper to do the $4 list.

I believe Walmart's website list their 4.00 prescriptions. thanks for the reminder too.. I will have look up and see if they have added any of my meds.

Quite a few places around here have the $4 scripts. It isn't just a WalMart thing. My favorite grocery store will fill scripts for certain meds for free. I don't have the complete list but have gotten antibiotics there for free in the past. It does pay to shop around since there is a wide range of prices for the same meds depending on where it is filled.

No sorry, I did not see Nexium on the list. I didn't see anything for heartburn, but lots of meds for heart conditions.

We checked there, and none of mine were on their lists. However, by calling around we did find quite a difference in prices at different pharmacies, so that is worth doing.

For things not on a Walmart or Target $4 list I've used online and abroad suppliers with very competitive prices and quality. I have used overseasrxdrugs.com and inhousepharmacy.biz for several years. You have to price shop carefully as these were the best deals on the drugs I needed, for myself and a relative, but may not be for another drug class---and may not be all the time. I don't even think the second one requires a prescription which can be convenient too--arguably, you shouldn't always have to pay a doctor's visit fee to get a new prescription for a drug you well tolerate and need long term.
