According to the British press the opposition mounted a dirty tricks campaign including rumours that her husband (son of a former UK leader of the Labour Party) was a homosexual and that they had recently split up. She was forced to deny these rumours. Not nice for their 2 girls to read about/hear about though.

Danes have a "different" way of being dirty.

In WWII when the Nazis invaded, my Morfar (Danish for Mom's Dad) was a member of the Danish resistance, and a guard for King Christian X. He used to "befriend" the Nazis in the bars, and buy them drinks. He had an alterior motive though. He'd get them SO DRUNK they'd fall off of their stools, then he and his buddies would drive them into the woods, or drop them in the ocean, steal their weapons, and leave them there. Then they'd arm the Jews, and help them get out safely.

And everybody from North and South America is technically an American, but we handle our politics differently. I'll tell you when I was in the USA during an election, and my American husband will tell you when he's here in Canada for our elections, it's the biggest political culture shock we've ever experienced!!

I had absolutely no idea and have not even seen it on the news...I need BBC to stay more informed, I only have one world channel for a few hrs a day and it is on regular airwaves, not pay tv..(I will never pay for tv air waves). Congrats to the Lady~

We have BBC TV that we don't pay for, the the world service radio is much better. You can get it for free below, if you don't have a local radio station that carries it.

Yes, unfortunately. She ran because she was a woman, and was elected for the same reason. I'm all for female leaders, they (and the men too!) just need to make sure they are up to the job. If gender didn't matter, we'd elect one naturally, and not through some political circus.
