Halloween - the festival that all children love! A time when kids have the chance to get free candies that are offered by their neighbors, namely "Trick or Treat". It's a well-known custom that is favored by every single child.
Halloween is certainly not a child's privilege but also for adults to reminisce the good old days by gathering candies that were once their favorite when they were young. To know about Halloween's history, we have to go far beyond our parents' generation because the origin dates back to centuries ago, back into the days of pagan rituals; even before they have been made a part of the Church.
Although there are many tales about Halloween, it is a mystery that no one really knows its origin. Some people believed that it stemmed from a Celtic festival to celebrate a plentiful harvest. On that night, the dead would rise and spread diseases to every living thing, including crops. That is why people are scared of Halloween night. This may also be the reason of the appearance of those Halloween staple scares nowadays.
When it comes to the tradition of trick-or-treating (the most enjoyable part of Halloween, really!), it is said that it has begun back in the Middle Ages. Back then, the poor would visit homes to pray for their deceased family and friends. In exchange, they would be given food.
These people are called 'Halloween peddlers'. This in turn explains why trick-or-treaters now often dress hideously and receive such a great variety of traditional tasty sweets.
Stories and speculations still come up every now and then about the origins of Halloween, however, it has been widely believed that it is of Irish and English descent. But, if you think about it, does it really matter where this tradition started? Not really.
After all, nowadays, we - not just limited to children - only enjoy Halloween for just that: Halloween. The origin no longer matters, for Halloween has became a day, simply for people to enjoy themselves by dressing up as every scary little thing they could imagine.
But, always remember, that underneath those scary masks are just children who are enjoying their childhoods to the best of their ability. Remember that, and think this a treat to be able to see those children's beautiful smiles!
