Amaryllis is also known as the belladonna lily, the naked lady, or an amarillo.

We have these growing alongside our next door neighbor's house--I have one growing in my garden, too.
Thanks--in this area, they only bloom in the first or second week of August.

I just noticed they're coming up in my front planters right now too, but not nearly as many as above...

I remember one of my mom's friends telling story about how her husband nearly drove off the road when she pointed some out. "Nekkid ladies? Where?!" XD

So it would seem. The usual color is white with crimson veins, but pink or purple also occur naturally. 'The common name 'naked lady' stems from the plant's pattern of flowering when the foliage has died down", although that explanation is no explanation to me.

And to make things even more confusing, "amarillo" is Spanish for "yellow"!

LOL__The parameters are thin to vapid. Any image in singles, or multiples with a blurb about the image(s), those are the minimal requirements...some are verbally challenged thus, I leave the door open. LOL___

Oh they are beautiful. I left all my naked ladies behind at my last residence. I had hundreds of them (red) and they made the most beautiful display when blooming. I shall miss them. Do you know why they are called naked ladies? It's because they have no leaves on their stems.

Finally--an explanation that makes some sense. Although I understand they come in several colors, this pink variety is the only one I see in Marin County, California. Perhaps the colors are a regional thing. The species is rather new to me--all I've discovered about them is the fact that they only appear in August around here.

I figured that "naked ladies" was derived from the "belladonna lily" designation, from the Italian expression "bella donna" meaning "beautiful woman"

There are many types of "Naked Lady Lilies". Mine were the Oxblood Lilies that bloom in September in my part of Texas and I could almost set the clock to their appearance, the second week in September. Awww they are beautiful but a short blooming period. I planted hundreds of them because of the show they make and of course over the period of the 35 plus years that I lived on that property they multiplied. Leaving them behind was hard to do, but I now have a wonderful excuse for digging in the dirt at my new home next door to my oldest son. New flower beds are being worked up and it's a good thing that I love to dig in the dirt (LOL).
