I've been home a lot the past week and a half recovering from surgery so I notice more natural activity outside. I have tomatoes, bell peppers and other plants in containers in my carport, which I can see from my kitchen.
I've had a long term friendship with cardinals since I took care of one years ago and love it when they come around. Lately, a beautiful male has been announcing his presence at my tomato plants. I watch carefully through the window, trying not to scare him off, to see what he's up to.
Well, apparently I have some caterpillars (not hornworms) trying to make a meal of my plants and they were spied by the cardinal. I watched him rip one of them off a leaf and fly off with it, then later come back and inspect the other plants to see if there were more.
In the past, I've seen them grab tomato hornworms and fly off with them, so needless to say, my friendship with cardinals just grows stronger as the years go by. Seeing them makes me happy. :)
