British fashion icon Vivienne Westwood thinks Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, looks "ordinary." "It seems to me," the 70-year-old legend of fashion stated, "that her image is 'ordinary woman.' Therefore, high-street shopper. And I just think she should be an extraordinary woman, wherever she gets her clothes from." The Huffington Post reported the interview.
Well, maybe, but "ordinary" resonates with the average woman, and there are millions of them around. Take a look at Vivienne Westwood's image, and it's extraordinary, all right—more Lady Gaga than Kate Middleton. Who would most women want as a fashion leader?
Westwood has shops featuring her lines and designs all over Britain, Eu
rope and even in LA. It's hard to know what they sell and to whom, because this designer originally did not want to be in the running for Kate Middleton's wedding dress—thinking the bride "undeserving". Now she admits the duchess' fashion sense "might be improving."
Vivienne Westwood even has unfriendly comments to make about the wife of Prince William and her "hopeless" makeup. "I think she's got a problem with eye make-up!" the designer says. "The sharp line around her eyes makes her look hard. Either she should be smudgy or wear none." Well, maybe, but a harder line seems to be trending among oft-photographed celebs. Kate Middleton appears to have developed a style that works for her, at this time. No doubt her makeup will evolve, but right now teens and women all around the world are copying it. Something must be going right.
Vivienne Westwood is not the first or the only fashion leader to criticize, but that would happen whatever the princess wore. Meanwhile, Kate Middleton is pleasing herself and her prince—and millions of fans. What more should be asked of her?
