The government is cracking down on all kinds of natural food, supplements and alternative medicines.  Just yesterday, they went after raw milk in commando-style raids.  Apparently, it is a felony to sell raw milk (milk that has not been pasteurized).

Holy cow... That is just awful. What happened to the choices we made? If people buy raw milk, they obviously KNOW they are buying raw milk. They want to buy raw milk. I suppose the Gov't say if you want raw milk, grow your own? What a crock!! I hope she gets someone good who will defend her!!

most people can't grow their own food -- it's actually unlawful in many places -- we're forced to buy from factory farms when they eliminate alternative food sources

This is true! There is a family here in Michigan that is fighting city hall because of a garden that is planted in her front yard. The yard was tore up due to road work, instead of grass, she planted a lovely garden. The city protested, she is now fighting it in the courts. She has 6 children to feed, why would they complain? It makes no sense. She has no sun in her backyard, yet it is sunny in her front.

My grandfather died (I was 7 days old) from drinking raw milk. I can understand why the laws were made.

On the other hand if people are allowed to feed themselves from their own land and labor then we won't pay as much money for food to the agribusiness big money interests. Capitalists don't want competition and see to it that government squashes their competitors whenever possible.

That was in 1941 so he would be dead by now anyway but the more I learned about him the more I wished I could have known him. He had a college degree around 1900 which was rare and because a small town Methodist minister in a rural part of western Iowa. He didn't want a big church. His family literally harvested nuts and berries from the woods and gardened to avoid starvation. My mother had only hand-me-down clothing until she was in her 20's unless someone in the family sewed the clothes. (My mother was a good seamstress and earned money sewing when I was a toddler.) But to have that kind of devotion to his faith, to have that kind of commitment when living in poverty when he often got offers from much larger churches which could have paid far more indicates to me that he must have been someone I could have had enormous respect for. (And he and my grandmother were really smart as well.)

today, you have to be careful about eating anything from a grocery store, despite all the government regulations and inspections, so why pick on a few people who try to grow their own food?

Most of the eggs you buy in the markets are actually year old eggs. That is why the yolks are pale yellow. All eggs are deep orange when hatched.

it is a matter of personal choice -- raw milk can have some benefits, and Alta Dena has a certified herd that does provide raw milk in California -- also, I remember when everybody had a choice between raw and pasteurized at the grocery store -- people should become educated, and not expect the government to make every little decision for them

I can remember as a kid drinking raw milk from our own farm and nothing happened but someone mentioned earlier about the cleanliness of the farm so I would definitely think about that! You can't be too careful these days.

yes, Shirley, cleanliness is they key, exp since pasteurization does not guarantee that the milk will be safe -- it's just one way of helping to make it safer
