Philadelphia Eagles lose One Defender to Seizure and Sign another from Saints
The only phone the Philadelphia Eagles haven't called is the hotline to Moscow. Having loaded their defense with Pro Bowl talent and loaded NFL news wires with a full almanac of stories, Philly added another promising piece to the defense in former Saints defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove. The Eagles did, however, suffer a major scare during training camp when defensive tackle Mike Patterson collapsed on the field into a seizure. Team doctors rushed him to the hospital and last reported him stable and alert.
Braylon Edwards Accused of Involvement in Detroit Bar Brawl
If any wide receiver wasn't feeling love from a team he helped reach playoff success it's Braylon Edwards. Months after making multiple big catches that helped the New York Jets reach the AFC championship; Edwards got shown the door in New York. Now he might be in serious legal trouble when witnesses linked him to a brawl at a local Detroit bar where two bouncers got stabbed by two of Edwards' cousins. Though there were no serious injuries police are investigating a recent claim that the wide receiver was more involved in the brawl than first thought. If so this would not be the first time for Edwards.
Bubba Smith of Baltimore Colts and Police Academy Fame dead at 66
While known more for his famous role as the silent behemoth Hightower in the Police Academy movies, Bubba Smith was also an excellent defensive end for the Baltimore Colts. NFL news sites reported Smith was found dead in his Los Angeles home. He was 66 years old. Smith spent his career hunting quarterbacks and was a member of the famed Colts squad who lost to Joe Namath and his New York Jets in Super Bowl III. Bubba, however, will mostly be remembered for the unforgettable character he played on the silver screen.
New York Giants Front Office Revokes Trade Permission for Osi Umenyiora
The New York Giants shut the door for a trade in the face of Osi Umenyiora when no team appeared willing to give up a first round draft choice. Several teams offered a second or third round pick but the Giants remained firm on their asking price. When no team stepped up, Umenyiora's agent received an e-mail stating all entertainment of trade talks would stop. It will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few days and weeks and what Umenyiora will do.
Detroit Lions rookie DT Nick Fairley expected to miss time with foot injury
Hailed as a young team on the rise led by Pro Bowl wide receiver Calvin Johnson and rookie of the year Ndamukong Suh, the Detroit Lions said from the end of the lockout that the key to their success was about staying healthy. That pledge took a major hit when first round draft pick Nick Fairley, the highly touted defensive tackle out of Auburn, injured his foot. He underwent surgery later in the day and expects to miss three to four weeks. That amounts to all of training camp, which makes significant progress practically impossible for a rookie. It's an ill omen for fans in Motown.
