On July 1st, we started our annual road trip. We were driving from NJ to Siesta Key, FL and back. At 9:30 we started out. All packed up the night before and ready to go. I made a tiny breakfast - just english muffins, cream cheese and jam and some coffee.
All revved up, we started out. The Mapquest directions (we don't have a GPS) said to go through PA so we did. We brought a picnic lunch to have somewhere along the way. When we got into VA, we stopped at the Black Hills Regional Park and found a picnic table. I opened up the bags and out came sandwiches.
As we were eating I got a surprise visit from a baby praying mantis. He (or she?) jumped on my back and made me jump! I pushed it off of me and onto the floor but it was just fine. My husband put his finger down and it climbed on his finger. He made sure it got safely into the grass.
We continued to eat and drink and then we got back into the car. We had several hours left to drive. Our stay that night was in Wilson, North Carolina, home of 2 great BBQ joints - Parkers and Bill Ellis'.
From the internet I found out that Parkers closed at 8:30 or so and Bill Ellis' closed a bit later than that.
By the time we found Bill Ellis' (we stopped at Parkers 2 years before), it was just closing but the nice people who owned it and ran it let us in to eat some of their bbq buffet. It was filled with wonderful things - fried chicken, bbq ribs, mashed potatoes, and all types of salads and such. It was all hot and sooooo good.
A great way to end our first day of our road trip.
