Trust is a funny thing on Pretty Little Liars. While the four girls can pretty much rely on each other—most of the time anyway—it's hard to know who to trust outside their little circle. With so many questions still unanswered, and not just who A is, the girls need to start closing ranks, and fast, because A is supposedly coming to get them, again.
In Pretty Little Liars "Surface Tension," Emily (Shay Mitchell) has officially moved in with Hanna (Ashley Benson), and that's stirring a pot full of drama. "What fun," A says in a gift basket. "Two liars under one roof. You're making it too easy."
But then A disappears for the rest of the episode, leaving the girls and their families to their own devices. Even with Emily dealing with Hanna's lack of studying, and Hanna realizing that Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) could be much more of a bad boy than he already is, they've got it pretty easy this week. Sure, Hanna's parents may be getting back together, but that seems small in comparison to everything else.
After all, the Pretty Little Liars episode title, "Surface Tension," couldn't be any more appropriate than what's going on with Aria (Lucy Hale) and the Montgomery clan. Ella (Holly Marie Combs) and Byron (Chad Lowe) have planned a party, and they're inviting some important people in Aria's life, including Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) and Jason (Drew Van Acker). Forget the visible tension Aria feels when her mom tells her, regarding her past teacher and current lover, "You probably want to get used to calling him Ezra." More interestingly, things are finally getting interesting for Aria, as Ezra sees that he might have a reason to be jealous.
But it's Mike Montgomery (Cody Christian) that makes the family buzz with tension. He was caught, again, breaking into someone's house. But this time, Jason didn't catch him; the cops did.
Angry at her brother for breaking his promise, Aria goes through his things to see what he's been stealing—and she finds Jenna's candle vase. But when she confronts Mike, she learns something scary. Mike never took it from Jenna; he took it from Officer Garret's (Yani Gellman) apartment.
Through all this, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) has it the hardest, as usual. Boyfriend Toby (Keegan Allen) has been clearing out the Hastings' backyard for a remodel, and he found a splintered old piece of hockey equipment buried on the property line. Who put it there? Jason DiLaurentis? Or was it Spencer?
Mr. Hastings assumes it was his daughter, trying to stir up trouble and attention for herself, and so he decides to burn the one piece of evidence that A didn't hand over to the pretty little liars.
So what is Spencer to do? After Toby insists cops always know more about a murder than what they publicize, Spencer decides to go pick a cop's brain. She wants to know what the cops know about what killed Ally. And so, she goes to the one cop she thinks she can trust: Garrett.
Spencer won't listen when Garrett says the whole thing is over because Ian is dead. Because she trusts Garrett, she admits she doesn't think Ian really killed Alison, or himself.
It's not until after that little confession that she gets Aria's text; they can't trust Garrett. They can only trust each other—for now.
But as Pretty Little Liars winds down its summer season, A will try to drive a wedge between these friends yet again, as he or she brings them down one by one.
The ABC Family drama airs on Tuesdays at 8PM Eastern.
