The facts are these: a 32 year old man in Norway appears to have bombed a government building in downtown Oslo, killing seven, then traveled to an island to shoot over a hundred young people at a Labour Party youth camp, killing over 80 of them. Anders Breivick impersonated a police officer to gain access to the potential victims at the youth camp. The total body count for the two attacks appears to approach 100, with another 100+ hospitalized.
Breivik's motivations are not clear, though he reportedly said "this is just the beginning" as an elite police squad captured him on the island. Of course speculation arises concerning Al Qaeda, but his racial background as an ethnic Scandinavian (which probably made it easier for him to impersonate a police officer) seems to make that unlikely. Americans recall the Oklahoma City bombing in which Timothy McVeigh killed over 200 civilian government workers. Is it possible that Breivick's motivations may have paralleled McVeigh's? It is interesting that Breivik's target was the political party that is currently in power in Norway.
Since Breivik is in custody now, it is likely that we will eventually know the full story behind his nightmarish act. But Norwegian police are now describing the blond, attractive, young Breivick as a Christian fundamentalist with right wing views.
