Went out just a little bit ago, to check the garden, and picked a few ears of corn. Was going to pick those ears yesterday but it was so dam hot outside, and I was sweating bullets, I decided to pick them the next day instead. Well the next day comes, and when I went out I found that something had broken one of my cornstalks, and ravaged what ears were ready for picking. This was the first time we have ever planted corn. We were both looking forward to cooking those up. Talk about disappointment! We were so proud of ourselves, as to how well that corn was growing. Especially since we never tried growing it before.
I have no idea for sure what got into them. My first guess was squirrels. Then when I saw the damaged stalk, and how the husk was peeled halfway down, all the corn cobs, I began to think maybe a raccoon. Never had any animals invade my garden before. Just insects, which I have always managed to fight off.
The remaining ears, which are quite small, might not make it to be harvest. We might get lucky and perhaps they will grow. But then again when and if they do, they may become food for the animal that destroyed the other ears of corn. Oh well. Guess thats part of gardening. Still disappointed though.
