As the latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows, the Texas drought is considerably worse than when Perry issued an “official proclamation drawing on his constitutional authority designating three days as Days of Prayer for Rain†back in April.
For the record, 10% of Texas was under extreme drought back when the praying happened. Now, in July, around 70% of Texas is under extreme drought.
Seems like Rick is not really that popular with the Big Guy........

Correction: 71% of Texas is under exceptional drought (which is worse than extreme drought). Another 20% is under extreme drought. As a result, over 450 square miles have been burned by wildfire this spring (and we're not even into summer yet).
The Big Guy helps those, who help themselves.
Global warming, the thing that Perry thinks is imaginary of course.
I wonde if the drought is going to get any Texans thinking. Actually, I should admit that even Texas is not monolithic. Plenty of Texans accept modern science, just not the guys in the Governor's house.

Since I have been an atheist since age 13, that seems pretty clear to me. But really, I think that Believers in a Supreme Being should accept that notion too. For me it has always seemed illogical for religious persons to want to sit back and beg for help.
Human existence is mysterious, both for believers and unbelievers. But surely the seven billion humans on the globe are more than beggars, surely we are active agents in our own survival and our own desires to serve others.
Of course, depending on which religious tradition you follow, you'd expect the Supreme Being to pick one or the other. Or maybe She'd take some third option mere humans can't imagine.
In any case, I also prefer to think of myself in which humans are not mere helpless beggars, but have some measure of control. At least, we should be able to control our own actions and reactions, if not our circumstances.
That reflects adolescent psychology, a stage at which point the U.S. seems unfortunately to be developmentally arrested. There are no consequences to wreckless behavior.
"But surely the seven billion humans on the globe are more than beggars, surely we are active agents in our own survival and our own desires to serve others."
Uhh.... If that were true, there wouldn't be "seven billion humans on the globe...."
Well, you'll have to send in half of your social security check to get the answer to that one.
"Since I have been an atheist since age 13, that seems pretty clear to me."
Well.... I'm not an atheist - but I don't think I believe in the traditional notion of God, either. I think intelligence (maybe, not the right word) or awareness is an inherent property of the universe. I certainly don't think that humans are the epitome of that property. I do think there is evidence in the transpersonal psychology field, and in the scientific studies re: near-death experience, to support a broader notion of intelligence, awareness, or consciousness, as something that is not unique - or even paramount - in the human species. The universe really does not orbit humanity!!!
And Rick Perry's an idiot.
Good for him. I am glad to hear that he was rational about that.
