Demi Lovato is opening up about the treatment she has been receiving since leaving rehab in January. Hospitalized for an eating disorder and also for being a cutter, she acknowledges that her biggest culprit is bipolar disorder.
According to RadarOnline, Lovato says that bipolar disorder--left untreated for many years as hers was--served as 'a gateway for the bigger issues that sidetracked her career.'
"Just looking back, I was unmedicated for so many years and it led to so many problems, which eventually led to some of my biggest problems which were anorexia and bulimia and cutting," Demi Lovato explains.
The former Camp Rock star and singer of the newly released single Skyscraper says issues with her eating disorder emerge every day, however the therapy she has and is still receiving has given her tools to cope with that issue.
"It's going to be a daily battle and I'm not going to be perfect, but as long as I wake up in the morning and I eat my breakfast and I say, 'Look, 'I'm going to eat this meal for right now. I'm going to eat for the rest of the day, I'm not going to self harm, and I'm not doing to do anything self-destructive,'" she says.
Many people live completely productive, happy lives with bipolar disorder. The key--as Demi Lovato pointed out--is to be properly medicated and to stay on that medication. While bipolar disorder is undoubtedly her biggest dilemma, it certainly sounds like things are in fairly good control for her right now.
Kudos to Demi Lovato for sharing her struggles with these issues with her fans. If even just one person reaches out to seek help as a result, she will have provided a remarkable service. It's important for everyone to know that bipolar disorder is a chemical imbalance in the brain that can in fact lead to issues like Lovato has, including cutting and various eating disorders. However with medication and the proper therapy, it can definitely be maintained--as this talented young woman has proved.
