Everyone in our family looks forward to taco night each week, but it can be a challenge to come up with new and interesting recipes. One of the best ways to add some variety to these classic handheld delights is by switching up the protein. Chicken and beef are the meats of choice in the United States, but a wide range of other proteins lend themselves well to the spicy flavor profile. While seafood is a little pricier than meat and poultry, it can add an exciting twist to your tacos. Lime and cilantro pair perfectly with the light flavor of shrimp; crab offers a richer taste and distinct texture. Opt for a light, flaky white fish such as cod or mahi-mahi when making fish tacos; these hold their shape well and will serve as a blank canvas for the other flavors.
Taco night is ideal for families because everyone has an opportunity to customize and add their own flair. To that end, be sure to have a smorgasbord of accoutrements. Cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, peppers, and olives are must-haves, but do not be afraid to think outside the box with items like avocado. Creating your own spicy salsa or guacamole will add a new dimension of flavor, as well. More adventurous home cooks can experiment with sweet fruit salsas, which go best with poultry and seafood tacos. These salsas typically contain tropical fruits such as pineapple or mango, and can be enjoyed as a dip on their own. Last but not least is the tortilla. There is nothing wrong with opting for store-bought shells, but making your own is simple and tastes infinitely better. All you have to do is heat some vegetable oil to about 250 degrees Fahrenheit and drop a tortilla in for about a minute. Use a fork or other utensil to shape the tortilla into the typical crescent shape.
