Weird Al Yankovic's hilarious video of Lady GaGa's signature hit "Born This Way" almost didn't happen. Luckily, his Twitter following rallied around the parodist and the video became a reality. With more than 5 million YouTube hits, the video has officially gone viral.
Speaking with Huffington Post's Shira Lazar last week, Weird Al explained that GaGa's management didn't want Al's version, "Perform This Way" to be made. Al has always been respectful of an artist's wishes, although legally he doesn't have to be. Al admitted this morning on 'The View' that Prince is the only artist to ever deny him access to their original songs.
It seems the whole runaround was the fault of Lady GaGa's management, and she herself was clueless. After blogging about the conundrum on Twitter, GaGa herself became involved and gave him permission.
Many artists claim that to be parodied by Weird Al lets them know they have "truly arrived." Michael Jackson was one of the first artists to give Weird Al a chance, and Al has parodied numerous Jackson hits, most recognizably, his "Beat It" parody, "Eat It".
Watch the video and see if you can get through it without giggling.
