Selena Gomez and her friend Miley Cyrus have a lot in common. Both are 18-year-old singer/actresses created and groomed through childhood and adolescence by the Disney star-making machine. Both are rich and incredibly famous. The ex-Hannah Montana star raked in $15 million just last year. Gomez has a reported net worth of $4 million. Both women recently wrapped major motion pictures. The "Who Says?" singer is currently promoting her just-released romantic comedy, Monte Carlo on a nationwide mall tour. And Cyrus's eagerly anticipated So Undercover will be released later this summer. All these similarities give rise to an inevitable question. Since the Miley Cyrus phenomenon came first, is Selena Gomez chasing her old friend--or at least trying to be like her--in every way? Right down to her highly-publicized romance with teen pop über idol, Justin Bieber?
Just as Miley Cyrus became more involved in music after Hannah Montana ended, so is Selena Gomez now concentrating on her recording career. Selena hosted the 2011 MMVAs just as Miley did in 2010. Just like Miley, the "Love You Like A Love Song" singer is "embarking on a major tour... in support of her new album." And like Miley, many of Selena's songs were written for and/or about the men in her life. Miley Cyrus wrote "7 Things" and "Full Circle" about Nick Jonas. Selena Gomez has revealed that she wrote "Bang, Bang, Bang" about her current boyfriend, Justin Bieber and her ex-beau, Nick Jonas. In it, she praises JB to the skies, while mercilessly trashing Nick. Ouch. "Love You Like A Love Song" is all about Bieber. In fact, Selena dresses like and imitates the Teen Dream in the song's music video.
The final comparison between these two very different, yet oddly similar, teen stars lies in their boyfriends. For better or worse, women are often defined by the men in their lives. And while it's impossible to predict or choose the person with whom one falls in love, it is interesting that both Selena and Miley have received intense public scrutiny and criticism because of their boyfriends. But there is a difference.
It is true that "Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are the young Hollywood couple of the moment, much like Miley and... Liam Hemsworth once were." However, Miley was a world-class mega-star long before she and Liam ever met. With all due respect to Selena, her star has risen considerably thanks to her romance with the Biebs. Prior to her involvement with JB, she was just one of many child stars on the old Disney show Barney who has found a niche on yet another Disney series called The Wizards of Waverly Place. Now, she's literally everywhere.
So, is Selena Gomez "chasing" her old friend Miley Cyrus? What do you think?
