On The Secret Life of the American Teenager, sex and pregnancy have been a major theme on the show. Now marriage is on the forefront.
Both Ben (Ken Baumann) and his father find themselves in marriages they no longer want. But Leo (Steve Schirripa) insists that even as unhappy as they are, they have to stay true to what they've committed themselves to. Viewers anxiously wait to see if Ben and Amy (Shailene Woodley) will eventually get back together. But first Ben has to decide if he's going to follow through with his committment to Adrian (Francia Raisa). Ben realizes they only married because of the baby but surprisingly, Adrian doesn't and still wants to be married. Adrian is the last person anyone would expect to hold on to such a marriage. That goes double for Ben, who has always done "the right thing" so to speak. For Monday night's preview, Ben seems to be battling what he wants versus what he should do.
As for Leo, Ben's father on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, the entire storyline of his dissatisfaction with Betty (Jennifer Coolidge) came pretty much out of the blue, just in enough time for father and son to both be mulling over the same problem. But viewers are confused. Why would Leo suddenly want out of the marriage?
The answer is fairly simple. Betty, while personable, doesn't exactly match up with Leo's intellect. She isn't someone he can confide in or someone he can feel really close to emotionally. Will he toughen up and deal with it, or will he fall into some sort of depression which might lead to drinking or maybe an affair with his long time secretary (who is already in love with him)?
The Secret Life of the American Teenager airs Mondays on ABC Family.
