Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus: Two pop stars who share a squeaky-clean Disney past and countless teeny-bopper fans. Other than that, they couldn't be more different. But which singing starlet is reigning supreme?
The easy answer is Gomez. Not only has she not stirred up controversy and friction for scandalous outfits, suggestive dance moves, and bong-smoking behavior (ahem, Miley Cyrus), the pretty 18-year-old also has the benefit of one pretty hot boyfriend: Justin Bieber.
Need more quantitative proof of Gomez's victory in the popularity battle? Well, it's now available via hard statistics from last Sunday's MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, hosted by Selena Gomez, which brought in almost three million additional viewers from 2010 (that's a 10.4 percent increase!). Gomez really was the hostess with the mostest, cutting a chic profile on both the red carpet and the awards show stage in her classic, yet edgy ensembles. Plus, her performance was top-notch.
And what a difference a year makes! Last year's MMVAs were hosted by the scantily-clad wild child Miley Cyrus and had 67 percent fewer viewers in the key 18- to 34-year-old demographic.
Of course, there are other possible reasons for the increased viewership of the MMVAs 2011 -- Lady Gaga and other hot performers come to mind. But, "Edge of Glory" aside, the most significant cause of the spike was probably Justin Bieber. It's obvious Beliebers and Selena Gomez fans alike simply ate up his not-so-surprise appearance and his witty banter with his sweetheart onstage.
Sounds like Miley Cyrus needs to find herself a Bieber if she wants to step up a rung on the popularity ladder. Until then, Selena Gomez has her beat!
