The 2011 NBA Draft is just days away and teams are making their short list of players they hope will be available when it becomes their turn to make a choice in the draft. The top two players are Derrick Williams from Arizona and Kyrie Irving from Duke, after that it will based more on team needs.
The latest rumor has the LA Lakers dealing Pau Gasol and his hefty contract to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a couple of players and the number two overall pick in the draft. Gasol has fallen out of favor in LA after his dismal showing in the playoffs this year and a change of scenery might be best for both parties. This makes sense in that Minnesota needs a veteran to add some leadership to a very young team and the Lakers desperately need to add some youth to an aging squad.
Philadelphia has been rumored to have Andre Iguodala on the trading block and the LA Clippers could become the team that gets the All-Star small forward. Chris Kaman has become a legitimate center in the NBA, but the Clippers feel they have a need for a small forward and the 76ers have a definite need at center. This is another trade that would make sense for both teams and would make both the Clippers and 76ers very much improved.
Look for several deals as the NBA Draft approaches, teams need to make changes to become playoff contenders, or add that one player that could make them championship caliber. Teams have never been shy about making trades and this year should be no exception.
