I’m not going to imbed this video in this post because I don’t even like to link it here, but I’ll have to provide that much. This was a Memorial Day parade in Pennsylvania. I’m not big on parades, personally. I find them boring and rather silly, but they obviously draw crowds so a lot of people don’t share my complete lack of passion to utter distaste and annoyance when my route is detoured because of them.
Many years ago, I suppose it was a nice American tradition to remember those who had fought and died. Since the Viet-Nam era, to me it only says that we may send you out to be killed and maimed for any ridiculous reason, but we’re going to remember and celebrate your valor at least once a year collectively as a nation.
For those who do attend these events, you’d think that in honor of those who have fought in real wars to uphold this country’s sovereignty, there would be every attempt made to see to it that it was a peaceful and unifying event, not an event that attempts to start another war in the selfish interests of a few.
Enter here, the atheists. Here’s a small group of non-believers who want to make themselves the focal point of this commemoration. It’s not enough for them to be recognized along with all the other veterans because they don’t think they are. Somehow they think that others think that people who don’t believe in God don’t join the armed forces and if they do, they somehow don’t get deployed to war zones. Of course, being predominantly a Christian nation (which they also don’t like to admit) these atheists felt the need to make themselves spectacles, to make themselves stand out in the crowd and be the IT, the ALL THAT, of the day.
If they had just paraded with their single banner like the Girl Scouts do and everyone else, had donned their God-bashing tee shirts, their official uniform, and marched along like everyone else…well if, but that would have been uneventful for them.
So what do they do instead? They take a video camera, send a guy out into the crowd to hopefully incite a riot so they can post it on the Internet and say that the unidentified people who threw rocks, bottles and punches were Christians. For all their efforts, that didn’t happen, but we just hear the voice of one atheist asking stupid questions like, “What do you think of atheists in foxholes?â€Â We hear him making statements like, “Support your atheist church.â€Â We have no idea whether there were several others of them in the crowds also doing much the same that they conveniently did not record. We also have no idea whether or not the people they showed who shouted expletives were atheists themselves planted in the crowd for the dramatic effect. In fact, since we all know how very violent Christians are, it makes it even more plausible that they were plants. Christians wouldn’t have just stopped with verbal abuse, would they? If what were really plants had done something physical, they would have been arrested and the “reality†*(as one of their banners noted, “embracing realityâ€) they would have faced, aside from fines and jail time, is that their ruse would be exposed.
The atheist at the beginning of the video said he was looking forward to “an exciting day.â€Â If a parade really is exciting to him, he isn’t what I would call a thrill-seeker, unless he was hoping for and expected something else that didn’t happen. I would venture to say that is more likely.
(Here’s another video of a portion of this parade without riot-inciters, the kind of footage you would expect from people who just wanted a peaceful memory of the day. I don’t know who these Tin Lizzie guys were, but this is also the kind of reason I don’t attend these events. Watching over-sized children parade as adults isn’t my idea of amusement. There is footage of several Memorial Day parades on that same page that would reflect the same wish to preserve a peaceful memory.)
P.S. You’ll notice that I also posted this to a group called Anything About Cars because the group’s description is “Anything and everything about cars.†The video footage in the parenthetical would seem to allow it to apply. You can remove it without comment if you think it doesn’t.
