Homeless
what was it?
what final straw upon the heap
of disappointments, failures
and untimely choices
turned the dream into a mirage
promise into misery -
a man with heart
into one with none?
did it all slip through his fingers
like sand, one grain at a time?
or did one cataclysmic event
make him a shadow of his former self -
a wraith in the land
of the living?
Could it happen to me?

It's a scary thought and I always think there by the grace of god go I. It's very easy to slip through the cracks in our current society.
Those with mental illness don't stand a chance to re-enter mainstream unless they have support.
The number of children who go homeless and hungry in our country is unfathomable - there is no excuse for it, it means we as a society have failed.
The homeless have their own society. Most of them are highly intelligent. Just about all of them have mental illness and addiction problems. Fact is...once you are reduced to zero...it takes months (after you get a steady job) to be able to afford getting into an appartment and transportation. There are those who know how to deal with this. But it truly is a bureauocraticc nightmare. No one can make it back without help. Dedicated help. Now days you can do nothing without a photo id. Not even get a photo id.
As my Dad used to say: "It is a great life if you don't weaken."
It is a sad reality. They are the "collateral damage" of today's society.
