Supernatural ended its sixth season with Castiel becoming the "new God" and telling Sam, Dean, and Bobby to bow down to him. It was a chilling final scene for the season, and hours later, it was announced that Misha Collins would not be a series regular next season.
Reduced role for Collins
Sera Gamble talked to TVLine about the fact that Misha Collins is no longer a series regular: "We have passionate fans. We have fans that have strong opinions about a lot of things that happen on the show. People ask me if I'm going to get worried about fan backlash [in the wake of Collins' demotion]. We just want to tell a good story and not be redundant and bring you interesting stories that are fresh. Going into Season 7, we have a new, interesting story that we want to tell to you. That's what's front of mind right now."
Ever since that announcement, however, fans have been wondering if this means the end of Castiel on the show. When he was only talking about taking in the souls from purgatory, that was compared to potentially becoming a ticking time bomb, which upon its explosion, would take out a large area. Now that he is the "new God" with all that power, there has been some concern that Castiel's time on the series could be limited.
Jim Beaver has been a recurring guest star since he was first introduced in the Supernatural season 1 finale, and Bobby has survived (with a resurrection and a demon deal) thus far. This doesn't necessarily mean they're going to kill Castiel off, but he will have far to go before he can be what he once was on the show for the brothers and Bobby - someone they could trust. After all, he tore down Sam's wall and ended the season threatening to destroy them if they didn't "bow down" to him. First, he's going to have to give up all that power, and the longer he has it, the harder that will probably be. Sam may be awake now, but he has the memories of hell and there was a glimpse that showed that could slow him down in a hunt. Will this arc end with Castiel exploding? How will the new theme of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fit in?
Are you worried about what Misha Collins no longer being a regular means for his character on Supernatural next season? How do you see Castiel as the "new God" going into season 7?
