This is "Tinkin Toe". (Stinking toe)
No prizes for guessing what it smells like. This fruit is very popular all over the Caribbean, especially with children. The shell is very hard, so here's what you do: Smack it with something very hard to get to the edible part (DON'T BREATHE!!!) pop the fuzzy covered seeds in your mouth. Give them a good covering of saliva before breathing.
A farmer in my congregation invited us to his farm this weekend, but it rained too much, so he picked fruit for us instead and we visited him at home. These were among the fruit he gave us. If you can get past or avoid the smell, they actually taste great.
They're also used as headache medicine.
One other warning. The smell is very enduring. Nobody will want to kiss you after you've eaten this. Mouthwash doesn't work; only time.
One youngster in the group who had never tasted it before breathed too soon; "YOU REALLY EAT THAT THING????"
