Tonight, Dancing With the Stars 2011 frontrunner Chelsea Kane took on Mark Ballas to battle it out in the DWTS rehearsal hall in preparation for the complicated Argentine tango. This fierce national dance from the tip of South America put these two troopers through a tough training session, as Kane discovered the subtleties of this particular ballroom staple.
During their practice session, Chelsea made sure to watch her footing as she thought about keeping her opposition at bay. Mark told the Disney princess that she had to practice like a finalist, pointing out every single flaw as they tried to perfect this tough dance. So, by the time these two took the Dancing With the Stars floor for the Argentine tango, they were ready. Really ready.
Their lifts looked professional, their dramatic choreography sexy and salacious. The judges noted this effort, giving Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas relatively high marks for their first performance of the evening. Still, not all the judges were thrilled with their every nuance and said so.
Carrie Ann Inaba told Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas, "OK, we are in the semifinals so I am going to be picky." Then she laid it on, saying Kane didn't "give it [her] best." Still, this Dancing With the Stars judge awarded the eager hoofers a 9.
Meanwhile, Goodman gave a better critique. "Your legs lacked a little authority through the dance," said Len, who quickly added, "[Still, your Argentine tango] was clean, it was precise, the lifts were right in character. It was a first-class performance." Len Goodman gave this pair a 9.
And then Bruno Tonioli, ever glib and as exuberant as always said, "I know exactly how you played it and you played it well." He then compared Chelsea to Sharon Stone, saying she had the "basic instinct" for her Argentine tango with Mark Ballas. The reward? A 10 from this jolly Dancing With the Stars judge.
So, at the end of their first dance out of three on Dancing With the Stars, Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas were at the top of the leaderboard--at least for that moment. More drama and more dances came afterward, but these two pulled off a tough assignment with the Argentine tango.
Did you see this pair dance tonight on Dancing With the Stars? Did you enjoy the Argentine tango performed by Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas? Thoughts?
