What's this hype about Starbucks all about?

I am not a coffee drinker myself but I know with my hubby it has to be Tim Horton's tea or nothing every morning. I don't see the fascination myself.

My hubby needs cold milk *lol*

For me it is a mouthful of Pepsi.

I live starbucks because to me it's just really good coffee. I've tried dunkin donughts but everytime I go and get something to me it tastes disgusting. I only ever had one drink that tasted half way decent

It's easy if you a driving somewhere and want to cruise in for a quick cup of awake-ness. But usually I make coffee at home and I like it better that way.

Starbucks is a marketing idea, getting people to pay lots of money for a product that costs pennies.

Not my favorite--I do love a cup of Tim Horton's though. I pay $1.92 for an extra large there and it's about 24 oz.

I'm like Peter I mak myown at home and enjoy it. The number of times I visited Starbucks for meetings I did not like their coffee. Besides being too strong it cost too much.

I think it is a rip-off myself, and don't buy there. Most coffee I have is made at home. I also developed a negative opinion of them years ago when we studied their business model and practices in college courses I had... they made my bad guy list, LOL.

Oh, why is that? I am curious about their business model...

Well, the short answer is when going big time into the "coffee culture" business, they deliberately set out to corner the market and drive out their competition by any means necessary. Since they own all the stores, with the exception of some limited licensing agreements, it was easier to do than say a chain that sells franchises to individual people. Once an area was chosen to expand in, they would begin targeting independent "Mom & Pop" shops first as the easiest to kill because they don't have the money backing of a corporation to fight back economically; Mom & Pop have to make a yearly profit to survive. They often would try to buy them out, if that didn't work they would get to the owner of the building space and buy out the lease/offering far more than Mom & Pop could pay for the space, thus forcing them out. If that didn't work, they open new stores as close as possible, very many at a time in cases saturating the area, undercutting pricing and promotions, operating them at a loss that the corporation could absorb easily until the competition slowly died. After killing them off, they often closed losing stores to meet the actual demand with the remaining making a tidy profit. New independent competition wouldn't bother to try, as the area is already saturated with coffee cafe's and making business loans etc. to independents more unlikely to be approved anyway with the risk being too high. Being willing and able to operate at a loss in given areas for quite some time, opening stores they know they will/may close later, is a huge advantage they have. They also moved to buy out other chains/companies in similar manner.
Many comedians and shows make fun of how many Starbucks are around as part of their routines as an example. I've seen scenes in that show South Park where one of the characters will be walking down the street, and every third building or so behind him is a Starbucks, LOL. Anyway, a corporate carnivore of the worst kind, LOL.
By the way, they are the largest coffee shop type company in the world now, and taken the above practices overseas big time; some with much controversy still. As a point of interest, the name Starbucks also supposedly comes from the name of the first mate(?) in the book Moby Dick. Kind of ironic, as Captain Ahab was will to do anything and step on anybody to get that white whale, ha!

I honestly wonder whether these business practicas are also possible in Germany. I really doubt that with all our authorities watching everything...

As far as I know, nothing technically illegal ever happened, just aggressive predatory business moves that makes one question their ethics. To me it just goes beyond the normal lines of fair(?) competition. I guess it depends on what the laws are in a given country, or if enough people care.

I will NEVER go to Starbucks. I don't care for their business practices, I don't like the way they treat their employees. I don't like their coffee. I like the local coffee houses better. If I decide to treat myself, I like to have my drink the way I want it. Not the way the machine puts it out.

I am not crazy about Starbucks. To me their coffee is very strong. I like Dunkin Donuts better but since Christmas have been sticking to making my own. I have a Keurig coffee maker and it takes no time at all to brew and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

I have only gotten drinks from there when someone has given me a gift card, they are just about up there with Dunkin donuts in prices
