There's been quite a bit of buzz about Lady Gaga's latest video, "Judas," which loosely portrays Gaga as Mary Magdalene and a somewhat unknown actor as Judas Iscariot (who, I might add, appears to be part Black). Gaga's already had to defend the video pre-release stating, "This video has not meant to be an attack on religion," in an MTV interview.
So what are the critics saying?
Entertainment Weekly’s “kneejerk reaction†was negative, at first thinking that perhaps it was her “weakest video to date.†But after examining the video a bit more – and realizing that Laurieann Gibson’s choreography may be to blame – EW finds it ultimately “refreshing†that she opted to give “such a personal perspective on her faith.â€
Vulture, meanwhile, felt “Judas†didn’t quite live up to the drama surrounding it. “[D]espite the crowns of thorns, biker gangs, impressive eyeliner, and religious symbolism, this feels less ‘eventful’ than videos past,†Vulture notes, adding that we’ve seen Gaga play with religious themes before.
Agrees the New York Post, “While there is undeniable religious iconography throughout the Bethlehem biker babe video…[‘Judas’] barely registers a blip on the Blasphemy-O-Meter.â€
U.K. paper The Guardian was similarly underwhelmed, saying that the music video is “Fairly sedate, all things considered.†But, The Guardian adds, it’s almost better that way: “the fact that Judas isn't particularly 'controversial' and doesn't get weighed down by its own importance means that it's actually much more enjoyable as a music video.â€
Lady Gaga combines motorcycle mayhem with biblical betrayal in the music video for "Judas," the second single from the pop star's forthcoming sophomore album "Born This Way." The five-minute-plus clip, re-imagines the singer as Mary Magdalene and actor Norman Reedus as Judas Iscariot.
ÂLady Gaga Judas on Ellen Video
I've watched it 3 times already, and find it strangely mesmerizing. I didn't view anything offensive about it, but I was focusing more on the talent and raw genius of Lady Gaga and her video entourage. The song itself, has a foot-tapping, rhythmic beat, and unlike "Born this Way," which some were comparing to Madonna's "Express Yourself," this song is strictly Lady Gaga.If you haven't seen it, click on the 1st link, and tell me what you think. I also included the link to her toned-down performance on Ellen, but LG does give Ellen a li'l peck on the lips...Enjoy!
