"Shelly" Scarf

I have spent quite a lot of time lately on Facebook...blah blah blah. I have neglected my camera unless I need to snap a picture of something I have created. I have made scarves, earrings, hair bows, various other things, and chased an incredibly active 21mo around the house. All of that aside I would love to share a terrific pattern with you crafty people.... <insert dramatic music> The "Shelly" Scarf! I received the pattern in a free crochet patterns email and followed that to the hot link above. Totally easy even for a beginner like me...and it ends up taking a day or two with the various interruptions made by the 21mo and 6yo. The first one I made (not pictured because it was an immediate gift) took me maybe 12 hours with minimal interruption.

I crocheted them with Simply Soft Caron in various colors. The yarn is super yummy soft and has a slight silky texture and sheen. So this is one of the many things I have been doing Off Gather :)Â Miss everyone and hope all is well~

Now I was not good at the hats...when it comes to making sure you don't crochet too loose or too tight... *sigh* I did do about three or four hats but I was so stressed the entire time wondering if it would be big or small enough that I didn't do more.

Yeah...NE FL here but we did have some nice cool weather this year. These scarves are actually nice and light. Good for the cool morning that finds the afternoon 30 degrees higher by noon LOL! I mean, it is just wrong to start the day too cool to go without a jacket but end the day feeling like heat stroke ;)

Tammy it is super easy to do a scarf. I am basically self-taught my self. At least if you start with something like this (short rows and not a bunch of different stitches) Crocheting is super calming and is a terrific stress relief. You get ticked about how it looks you just pull the stitches right back out ;) Just beware to try with a nice smooth yarn that is not too small (crochet thread will be too tiny) and a good sized hook (I like using a metal K hook) Good luck!!

Years ago a friend gave me a rug that she had started and a G hook I think she said. She said it was hard to find that hook. any way I never did finish it. I lost the rug and the hook some where over the years. Crochet looks a lot like mackermae (not sure how it is spelled) to me.

There are so many great resources online for beginners and experienced crocheters...I am not sure if it is hard to find a G hook...I have one that I bought recently in bamboo...I would suggest though to find a good metal one. Walmart carries many different sizes.

The one I had was plastic. I have a book with many different types of stitching, knittiing and crocheting patterns. I don't get to walmart much. The one time I looked they didn't have many hooks to choose from. I am getting pretty fond of Amazon I will look there for one. Thanks for the information. Is bamboo hard to work with?

I bought a wonderful set of bamboo hooks on Amazon. Because they are wood I found that the tips would split slightly and catch my thread. I burned the parts that was splitting and the problem was solved. I prefer the way the yarn slides on the plastic or metal hooks. For a beginner I would really get one good sized hook (like I said my go to is a "K") and see where it goes from there. There are a FANTASTIC variety of hooks on Amazon. The one thing that helped me a bunch was a set called "I taught myself to crochet (there is even one for knitting)" and it comes with several hooks. A great buy!

Okay, that sounds like a good deal. I will let you know when I am going to get started. Probably in about 2 wks. My mom does this knitting and crocheting, I needle point, Well I used to. Might as well try to learn something that I wanted to do.
