Toys "R" Us is gearing up to sell the Apple iPad 2 at stores, according to rumors discussed on tech sites like CNET and modmyi.com. A posting of a training guide for store employees indicates the store is ready to launch sales of the tablet soon.
The training materials discuss the features of the iPad, as well as accessories such as the Smart Cover, that will be available for sale in the toy store. Is this a good move for Apple? As children are becoming more and more tech savvy, common "adult" devices are already making their way into youngsters' hands. Numerous apps and options for the device already target the younger set, so it is likely mom or dad may want to get their children their own iPad 2 as a self-defense mechanism.
Why would Toys "R" Us want to add the iPad 2 to their product line? The store already stocks many other electronic devices, so the Apple tablet is not that much of a stretch. The popularity of the product could help bring in customers who will make multiple purchases once they are in the store.
The tablet also makes for a great promotional piece. Since the tablet can be used for gaming, educational purposes, and general entertainment, the product "fit" is not as unusual as it may appear. As Toys "R" Us has been gaining ground on rivals Wal-Mart and Target in traditional toys, perhaps they are planning to launch an attack on the (young) consumer electronic market as well, with the iPad 2 being their focal product.
