What will become of the Today Show after the huge announcements this week from Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer? In this unprecedented situation, the show could be losing both of its hosts.
According to a report from Us Magazine, Matt Lauer told NBC executives that he will be leaving the show when his contract expires at the end of 2012. It was just a day or two ago that Meredith Vieira announced that she would be leaving when her contract expires as well.
Of course the vacancies of Lauer and Vieira wouldn't necessarily take place simultaneously, it's the first time the two anchors of such a prevalent TV news program have considered leaving within such a close time frame. Usually when one of the major hosts leaves, the other remains to man the helm.
When Bryant Gumble left Katie Couric on the Today Show, he was replaced by Matt Lauer. Katie, of course, ran the show. When Katie stepped down, Meredith Vieira replaced her, with Matt in the main spot. If both Lauer and Vieira leave, who will be the show's main anchor?
Ann Curry has long been with the Today Show and is well versed, well spoken, and very well liked. Is it possible that she is being groomed for at least one of these roles? Since Katie Couric will be leaving CBS News, could one of those spots possibly have her name on it?
Of course, much of this is still speculative, but fans of the Today Show know one thing: They have endured changes of the proverbial "guard" before, but to lose both Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira at the same or similar times? It simply wouldn't seem like the Today Show any more!
