“Honey?”
Expecting the interruption, Leo ruffled the paper and mumbled, “Hmmm?”
“Honey, I was just wondering if you remembered what tomorrow was.”
Leo smiled to himself and turned to look at his new bride, trying not to let her see the smile. “Tomorrow? Oh, yes, of course, April Fool’s Day.” He put down the paper, stood, and pulled her in for a hug. “Don’t worry, honey, I’m not going to spring any kind of weird surprise on you.”
Kristin pulled back from him and said, “You did forget. You swore you wouldn’t forget and you did.”
Leo laughed and said, “Come on, Honey, I didn’t forget. Come with me.” He led her out to the car, put her into the passenger’s seat, and said, “Here, let me put this blindfold on you.” He tied a black scarf around her eyes, closed the door, and got into the driver’s seat.
It was only five minutes when Kristin heard gravel under the tires and the car stopped. Leo got out and then she heard the door open next to her. Pulling off the scarf, he said, “Okay, Honey, open your eyes.”
When her eyes adjusted to the light, she saw twenty or so men standing around the car. “Leo, you’re scaring me. I didn’t ask for a bunch of men.”
Leo laughed outright as he walked to the back of the car, opened the trunk, and pulled out his duffel bag of gloves, balls, and bats. “Come on, guys, let’s get this game underway,” he shouted as he ran out onto the middle of the diamond, followed by the two teams. “Come on, Kristin, here’s your diamond and you’re the star pitcher.”
Kristin squealed, grabbed her pitcher’s glove from the back seat, and ran out onto the field. As she got to the mound she looked at Leo and said, “Come on, you no-hitter, get up there. I’m going to strike your butt out every time you’re at bat.”
Leo shook his head and ruefully wondered if he had misunderstood when she had asked him for a diamond for her birthday.

Good imagery here:

Thank you very much. The birthday came in at the end because I realized I hadn't said anything about why he bought her the diamond.
Now featured in the Triple Name Club.
Thank you.
baseball players, and a mitt and gloves, but hey, at least you got her a diamond, it is the thought that counts, Thank you so much for writing for my first FWE , I really appreciate it, and loved the story, love, Elsie
My pleasure, Elsie; you put up the perfect prompt for me and I thank you for that.

Then again, I don't ask for diamonds. I ask for useful things ... I'd rather have something I can DO something with than a decorative item. I'd rather have a nice coat than a necklace. A new blender before a ring. Something that would make my life easier or make work more fun. However, I do like new experiences ... restaurants, movies, vacations...
See? Your post made me think ...
Ow.
