Bias attacks are an ongoing problem throughout the country. Too many people think they have the right to attack someone because that person is gay. Damian Furtch was attacked in New York City recently due to his sexual orientation. This brings back painful memories of the news that Matthew Shepard was beaten because he was gay and then attached to a fence and left to die in Wyoming. Hate exists and it is a sad aspect of humanity.
When bias crimes occur in New York City, one of the most diverse places in the world, it is particularly sad. The recent beating of a young man in the West Village is an example of how hate erupts all too often in all kinds of different locations. Damian Furtch, age 26, was beaten by two men who were yelling anti-homosexual slurs at him. Furtch stated “This has to stop. Under no circumstance should a person be attacked for their sexual orientation,” notes the NY Daily News.
Damian Furtch was attacked after being harassed inside a McDonalds at W. Third Street. A group of men were bothering him over the clothing he was wearing. He had on a belt that was pink and pink shoelaces. He was wearing the pink items for his job at the Pink Teacup, reports DNA Info.
After verbal abuse inside the McDonalds, Furtch went outside to escape the two males bothering him. They then followed him outside.
A Violent Attack
Damian Furtch was attacked and terrorized because he is gay. He has two black eyes from the incident and his nose was injured. The neighborhood where this crime occurred has also had two other bias crimes against gay people since October.

The police are looking for two Hispanic males of around ages 18 and 20. One man has a tattoo of a cross under his left eye. He is about 5'8 and has a weight of about 150 pounds.
