Reality Verses Real - Just Thinking Out Loud

I was listening to Pandora and the song "Real" by James Wesley came on. I had never heard this song before but I loved it. 

 

This song starts out with this  "500 channels but nothing on but reality shows about someone's so called life." He goes on to say what "Real" is.   It got me to thinking. 

I personally do not like reality shows much. One would think that "REALITY" would mean "REAL" but is it really "REAL".  I mean they edit it and you do not get to see everything that goes on.  Think about it. .  you see what they want you to see. How is that "REALITY" or "REAL". 

To me "Real" is the good, bad, ugly as well as the good, great and wonderful parts of life.  We all have trials that are "REAL".

I only watch Survivor (it's amusing) and The Amazing Race (they go places I wish I'd be able to visit)....I don't care for any of the other ones at all. I don't understand some of them and why they are entertaining.

I don't watch much reality TV. I watch the Amazing Race and sometimes Survivor.

I'm not really into reality shows. They certainly aren't real. But, I like fiction anyway. Ha, ha.

I like Extreme Makeover, and The Biggest Loser. Those are my reality shows. I like them because they motivate me and good things happen in these shows.

I loath reality shows, for exactly the reasons you mention. Why not make a show about my daily trip to the cafe? That's REAL, especially if you just follow natural me with a camera, and it's positive! No one ever makes a reality show about someone having an every-day-wonderful life. LOL

I don't watch any reality shows unless you consider Extreme Home Makeover reality. Who can be real with a camera in your face all day? I did watch Kate plus Eight a few times back when they were a real family but then it got disgusting with all the snapping at each other. I have enough real life of my own without peeking in others windows.

I don't watch "reality" shows. The term is meaningless. I think they pay people to allow them to ruin their lives while appealing to a thirst for sensationalism and attracting advertisers.

It does appear that there is an audience. Sadly, there is an audience. I know that I will sound like a bit of a snob but it distresses me that in my own little office I cannot find anyone who cares to discuss anything more than "Housewives" or "Idol".

I don't do reality shows. My feeling about them is that the participants are too willing to jump into a show in which the intent is to show them at their worst, purely out of greed. I don't want to see people at their worst. I sure don't have to turn on the TV to see people at their worst. Most people are happy to be at their worst for FREE.

OH MY GOD! I must be a BIGGEST LOSER! I don't watch that show but I watch 90% of the others. I am so sick of being smarter and faster than the detectives, seeing all the movies over and over and I cannot stand sitcoms. Every time I hear a commercial with a Tim allen voice over I cant find the remote fast enough! Well I enjoy some of the housewives, Top Chef all the fashion shows like project runway, the fashion show, Iman,auction shows storage locker shows and I always have my last channel CNN!

I love "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race", they are the only two reality shows that I watch. Wouldn't it be nice if we could edit our lives so God would only see what we want Him to see. LOL! I wonder if my edited version would be watchable, yikes!

i have been against reality shows since survivor and "real world" they were just a way for the networks to make a cheap show. no writers required. i cant understand why they blew up like they did...

Funny you should mention Survivor -- when that was being hyped, I thought it sounded horrible: and it was just the beginning of the rest of the madness.

I used to be non-reality show but not now. I love DWTS and a few other shows. I don't watch Jersey Shore (so stupid), Bachelor or Bachelorette, Kate plus 8, but I did watch Sarah Palin's Alaska (I don't like her but I was curious). No, the shows are not reality at all. Some have even admitted to scripting and patching things together to make good tv. I just watch for the fun of it and to keep current. I much prefer sitcoms, Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, Chuck, and shows like that.

I don't watch reality shows because as you say we only see what they want us to say. I do like Celebrity apprentice though but that is more about the game then the people. I also like competition reality shows like American Idol, but not shows that show people just living. I was watching this show called Downsized though which is pretty much a reality show, it was a show about a family who went from a high 5 figure income to almost no money at all. I found it interesting how they cut back, earned extra money and changed their lives.

I also like the Fairy Job Mother. She helps people get jobs after they have been unemployed for a long time, and she helps them prepare their resume, find jobs that will fit them and helps them with interviewing techniques, and she also helps them straighten out their lives and come to grips with their finances.

Good points. I do watch two reality shows, very different from each other. Dirty Jobs and Progect Runway. Both are entertaining and make me laugh. But only Dirty Jobs leaves me with respect for the people they feature.
