A famous adage considered that health is our greatest wealth. No wonder, that, when we became sick and ill we feel so poor and weak. Each of us has happened to be a patient at some point of our lives. And being one is such a burden and not an easy experience especially when we can't find the right man/woman wearing medical lab coat for us. Probably, the reason is that there are a lot of physicians that we can’t appreciate and we are not at ease to be with. Some doctors in white lab coat are even unethical that we often find it hard to find good physicians. However, there are times that the blame for not finding the right physician lies unto us. Well, if doctors in white lab coat and nurses wearing medical lab coat have this so called medical ethics, patients also must have rules to follow in relation to the physician and healthcare personnel they are dealing with.
1. Trust your Doctor
Obviously, we see our doctors because we need help and we can't heal ourselves by our own understanding alone. Some patients though, seemed to be more knowledgeable and better than their doctors, always doubting their own doctors advice, prescribing their own medicines and doing things, eating foods and having a habit that are not healthy for them. Why need a doctor if you can decide about your health for yourself? I guess the issue here is not just about disobedience but about self-discipline and trust. If we don’t have confidence on our doctors, then why don’t we study Medicine?
2. Respect begets respect
Along with trust comes respect. Jesus and Confucius had been saying that anything that we want/don't want to do unto us, we must do/not do it unto others. Respect begets respect. Physicians want you to respect them, for them also to respect you in return. With respect at hand, care would be easier to do and be developed. With this you could be assured that you will have a smooth sailing relationship with your doctor in medical lab coat.
3. Comply with the doctor’s order
Your doctor’s order and prescription is a must to be observed. Compliance with the doctor’s order is not for the sake of your doctor wearing white lab coat but for our own sake. Again, this is an issue of trust and obedience. Sometimes, we must learn from abiding, and if not, we will eventually learn from the hard way, or even from death, where we have no second chance at all.
4. Have a quality time with your doctor
Going to the hospital to talk with your doctor takes time and effort and eventually there will be only a limited time to have a discussion with them knowing how busy they are. During this time, make it a quality time with your doctor. Ask him what you want to know and need to know. Ask also the advantages and disadvantages, personal opinions not just professional and take time to know your doctor more. In doing so, he/she will recognize what you really need aside from the medical one. Misunderstanding with your doctors could also be prevented. Don’t forget to take notes if possible. Remember that there are things and prescriptions that we don't often remember.
5. Avoid switching Doctors
Changing doctors from time to time may have a good reason but it is quite not advisable. Switching doctors is just like planting a seed in one ground to another. That seed, have a great possibility to die and wither, and if it may grow it will never mature as a healthy and a strong plant. Without a tough foundation, patients, like plants will not be comfortable with their different doctors. Though, there is nothing permanent in this world, we could always manage to have a secured, trusted and a stable doctor while we are still living.
