Sasha and Malia allegedly received foreign gifts which amounted to thousands of dollars but the gifts were sent to the National Archives. Surprisingly, Sasha and Malia
didnÂ’t even get to keep one of their foreign gifts. The girls seem to be doing alright though since they probably have more than enough things lying around the White House to play with.
However, the clause in the U.S. Constitution which disallows foreign gifts from being accepted by federal official or their family members will allow said recipients to re-purchase the gifts (which were initially given to them) once the federal official is no longer in employed as a federal official. Geeze, talk about the government making a killing on something free.
Anyhow, a total estimate of the amount of foreign gifts given to the President Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their daughters, Sasha and Malia, have totaled nearly $1 million in 2010 alone! One of the items given to the young Obamas were jewelry sets which cost over $7,000 and was given to them by Saudi Arabian leaders.
What do you think about this clause? Do you think itÂ’s good since it doesnÂ’t allow federal officials to become the victims of bribes or do you think itÂ’s unfair? What do you think about the recipients having to buy back the gifts given to them once they are no longer federal officials? Do you think itÂ’s fair? Should Sasha and Malia be allowed to keep some of their foreign gifts?
