I just watched the 1969 True Grit again and I do like the way the final showdown between Rooster and Ned Pepper was shot in the new version, but I feel that John Wayne's deliverance of "Fill your hands you son-of-a-b...." to be more powerful, maybe because it was the only cuss word he used in the movie and I can't remember before that film him ever using a curse word before. bringing about a surprise to anyone who has seen all his movies that he used a curse word, making the delivery of the now famous line so powerful compared to Jeff Bridges even spoken tone. I do like both films for how they portray the novel. If I want closer to dialogue and structure with a rip roaring soundtrack I turn to John Wayne, but if I want more Grit and more accurate costumes with a more romantic soundtrack, then I will go with Jeff Bridges. Yes, the new film does deviate with a big step from the novel in the mid section of the film and a lot of the dialogue, while the old film sticks almost word for word the dialogue and the only differences being the ending and the more focus on Cogburn instead of Mattie.
