FBI is looking into the possibility of human trafficking by the Church of Scientology. Although no charges have been filed, the inquiry is still open.
The reason that human trafficking has attracted the FBI’s interest is because of the Sea Org arm of the church. The agency is investigating the labor practices in that group – they have 6,000 Scientology members who sign billion year contracts. That is certainly a long contract.
Former members have said that they were paid as little as $50 a week. Then, when they left the group, they were given “freeloader tabs” that said they owed the Church of Scientology tens of thousands of dollars. This is actually pretty insane. Who would even ask somebody to sign a contract for a billion years of service?
Although normally human trafficking deals with forced prostitution, it can also pertain to slave labor. Many former Sea Org members have given testimony of conditions that appear to fall under the definition of slave labor.
Although no charges have ever been filed, this case is still open with the FBI. Do you think that the Church of Scientology participates in human trafficking?
