Update on What's Going On.....

Well, I've had 3 different companies come out and give us estimates on fixing our sewer pipes, with one more coming out tomorrow morning. The estimates seem to be all over the board, with a low of $1650.00 and a high of $2820.00. It just seems very odd to have THAT big a difference in quotes. I've checked out the companies.....they all seem to be reputable and in good standing with the better business bureau.

I think we may actually go with the lowest quote....what do you think?

we usually go with the next to lowest just on principle... but in this case, I would probably go with the lowest as well.... especially since you've checked them out

Janet, Don't do anything until you hear the Third Quote! And before you do anything, You need to go to CNN/Clark Howard. See what kinda Advice He will give You! He is great in knowing a lot, in a Great Deal of Life's Problems that we all face!

I usually go with my gut. I go by the feeling I get from the company and if they talk to me like I am a "stupid woman". You'd be surprised how many get weeded out that way.

I'm always wary of the lowest quote because the lowest quote may not be the best quote and not include any cost over runs. Take a detailed look at what's included in each quote.

So far, the quotes all include the same items....the funny thing is, looking up the companies...the lowest quote company has the best reputation and rating.

Wow, that is a LOT of difference in quotes......did you ask for references so you could check them out even more? RedBird has a good idea, about checking on CNN, with Clark Howard......he's very, very knowledgeable and would be able to help. Also, you might get more details on each quote and see what is included before making a final decision.

I've looked the companies all up on review sites, like Kudzu....the cheapest one has the highest ratings.

Heck yea I would go with the lowest, and tomorrow I would tell the company coming out if they can beat that price.

That's a huge difference, crazy how the exact same repairs can cost such a wide variety of prices.

As long as you've checked the companies out, I'm sure the lowest price quote would be fine. I'd just hate for them to rip you off or make things worse. As much as I love being frugal, the lowerst price isn't always the best option. Ya know?!

It's a tough economy out there. The lowest quote may want the work more. I've never used it, but did you check out "Angie's List"?

Angie's List is a website which aggregates consumer reviews of local service companies, as a way to "capture word-of-mouth wisdom." Angie's List is unusual in that it charges consumers to see reviews reflecting the company's claim that charging consumers "adds credibility to the information."

I don't go to the BBB to check a businesses standing on anything because people can buy their grades. It has been all over the news how they will downgrade businesses that don't join while giving A+ to those that register-- and they use their ratings as a way of bullying businesses that are reputable, but do not want to pay their fees.

I would take the inbetween quote but that's me. Take a closer look at what the companies are promising you - a real close look. Do they have the proper licenses, certificates, etc to do the work? Will you have to supply anything extra for them to do the work? We took the lowest bid on getting our bathroom wall fixed and a new sink. Ah, we didn't know that we had to upgrade to the sink we wanted (just a pedestal sink, not one of those fancy ones you see on tv) somehow the medicine cabinet they would provide didn't "fit" and there's a medicine cabinet to buy. And last but certainly not least, get a time estimate. It took them over 2 months to do our bathroom. Or bathroom is _tiny_ but sometimes the workers didn't come for a few days, sometimes they would show up for an hour, stuff like that. We got somebody else to do this because we thought it would quicker than doing it ourselves. I'm not saying the company that offers the lowest would do the same to you, but just check it a little more closely....

The big issue is I didn't have much time to research...we need it done NOW. I hate not being able to use our bathrooms....shower, do dishes, and do laundry.

ask the company do they have other customers you can talk to - that way you can see how they work...I do understand where you are coming from, sorry it's so rough for you now...

as long as the BBB has not complaintsagainst them, go with the lowest.
