I teach second grade and for most years I do weekly homework packets. The 8-10 page packet goes home on Monday and needs to be returned by Friday. If the parents need more time they can also return it the following Monday. For the longest time I thought of doing daily homework. Most teachers at my school who teach second grade and below only do weekly packets, so I guess for a while I didn't want to be the only one doing it differently.
I'll tell you why I think daily is better. You wouldn't believe how many kids say they finished the whole packet in one day and have nothing to do the rest of the week. That is not the point, you should pace yourself and do a little at a time. Or there are those kids that don't like homework, keep putting it off, and wait till the last minute to do the whole thing.
Homework is supposed to be a follow up on what is being learned in class. I have a great math homework book. Today we will do lesson 14.4, so guess what? There is a 14.4 that looks just like it that can be done for homework.
Yesterday was the first time the kids in my class brought back their daily homework and they all liked it better. They said the parents liked it better too because they knew when they were done for the day.
I just hope some parents don't complain to the principal about this new change because we're supposed to be consistent with our homework. This works for me, for my class, so I can justify why I do it.
As a parent, which do you prefer? Daily or weekly packets for homework?
