This time on Musicheads Bill is joined by Jill Riley and David Campbell to discuss some all new releases for 2011. Up for discussion are the first album of new material from Gang of Four in 16 years, plus locals, Tapes N Tapes and the funky soul of Fitz and the Tantrums.
The cast also wonders: "If you had to pick your all-time favorite musician/recording artist, who would it be?"

Grateful Dead. Not only are they brilliant rock and roll musicians, but they mastered the art of improvisational jazz within their musical constructs, dissected the folk genre and mastered that, belted the blues in their early days and lyrically kept stride with the likes of Bob Dylan. An entire community was formed that managed to live within the rest of society, yet by its own "laws." The Grandfather of, for lack of a better term, "jam bands." (It's just unfortunate that most other jam bands suck w/ the exception of Phish & Widespread Panic.)

Another artist I'd like to mention would be Neil Young. He's had an almost 50 year career with very few clunkers along the way. Not many artist can say that! Keep on keeping on Neil!

Good call. Most of Neil's music from the early to mid 80's was weak (the Geffen years), but he's been consistantly good to great since the late 60's.

Also, think about how many bands or musicians that have you heard that sound like Neil Young? I can name about 20 of the top of my head, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

A guy from Calgary CA named Tom Bagley (aka TOMB, ALester Hexx and Jackson Phibes), I have pretty much liked everything he has released since the mid-80s

I think Patrick Walsh is on to something. It's not surprising that this goes back to who we grew up with.
